Notes on a Scorecard

OPENING WEEKEND
It was great to see a combined 13,312 fans at our opening home baseball series last weekend. We had a great atmosphere and enjoyed the positive feedback on our popular new seating area in right field. While our new video board was also a hit, we will be making some tweaks before our next home series. Your feedback was heard and appreciated. We will increase the font size with the balls, strikes, outs and other game information.
FROGVISION

We’re very proud of the improvements we’ve made with our baseball stream this season. If you watched the FrogVision presentation Friday and Sunday, you saw a new multi camera TV quality production. Due to the women’s basketball game taking place simultaneously Saturday afternoon, we were a little shorthanded in our production at baseball and apologize for some technical difficulties. What you saw Friday and Sunday will be the norm for our FrogVision streams this season. As a reminder, the streams are only available when the games are not televised.

BASEBALL TONIGHT

We have baseball tonight at 6:30 p.m. versus Arkansas-Pine Bluff. It’s a make-up from Tuesday’s weather postponement. The first 300 fans will receive free clear TCU plastic gameday bags. We’ll also have $3 walking tacos available at the ballpark.

CLEAR BAG POLICY

As a reminder, we have the same clear bag policy in place for baseball games at Williams-Reilly Field at Charlie and Marie Lupton Baseball Stadium as you have experienced at Amon G. Carter Stadium and Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena. We very much appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Congratulations to men’s golfer Chelso Barrett and equestrian’s Molly Peddicord on being selected our Muscle Milk Male and Female Athletes of the Week! Chelso placed second at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, carding a 5-under-par 211 while shooting a pair of sub-70 rounds in the process. Molly earned her sixth Most Outstanding Performer of the season in Equitation over Fences. With her victory, she improved to 10-0 on the season.

FOOTBALL IS BACK

Spring football is here! We return to the practice field Friday. Please mark your calendar for Friday night, April 1, when we hold our Spring Game. Stayed tuned for more information on that event.

OUR NEWEST HORNED FROG

Congratulations to co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Sonny Cumbie and his wife, Tamra, on the arrival of their second son Hays! We know Grey is excited to be a big brother!

ON THE DOCKET

In addition to baseball tonight, our home events this week include women’s tennis Thursday at 5:30 p.m. versus SMU and men’s basketball hosting Baylor Saturday at 7 p.m.

Swimming and diving and indoor track and field are both at Big 12 Championships this weekend. Swimming and diving is in Austin, while track and field heads to Ames, Iowa. Men’s tennis is also on the road as it hits the Big Ten for weekend matches at Northwestern, Wisconsin and Illinois. Women’s basketball is at West Virginia Wednesday and Texas Saturday, before hosting Kansas Monday at 6 p.m. in its final home game. Equestrian is at South Dakota State Friday.

If you’re in Houston, make sure to hit Minute Maid Park this weekend as our baseball program competes at the Shriners College Classic. We begin play Friday at 3:30 p.m. versus Louisiana-Lafayette, before facing Rice Saturday at 7 p.m. and Houston Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

NAME THE MOVIE QUOTE
Last Week’s Answer: Ben Stiller, as Ted in “There’s Something About Mary,” said, “What the heck is Brett Favre doing here?”

This Week’s Question: “I am the last barman poet.”

COMPLIANCE CORNER

Charley Court, a tennis student-athlete at Ocean State University (OSU), turned 21 today. She is having a birthday party tonight and permitted her name and picture to be used by her cousin to promote the event. Charley’s cousin wanted to create a flyer, so she solicited the help from a good friend who is the chief marketing officer at a local entertainment group. In addition to Charley’s name and picture and the location of the party, the flyer included this other individual’s name as the promoter of event. When the flyer was completed, Charley posted it to her Facebook page and Twitter account. OSU stated Charley was unaware using her name and picture to promote a birthday party in her honor would be considered a promotion of the nightclub where the event was being held. Charley did not receive any compensation for use of her name and picture and even paid the cover charge to attend the event.

Is this a violation?

Yes. NCAA Bylaw 12.5.2.1 states that after becoming a student-athlete, an individual shall not be eligible for participation in intercollegiate athletics if the individual:

(a.) Accepts any remuneration for or permits the use of his or her name or picture to advertise, recommend or promote directly the sale or use of a commercial product or service of any kind;
or
(b.) Receives remuneration for endorsing a commercial product or service through the individual’s use of such product or service.

This is an actual fact pattern for a secondary violation posted on LSDBi. In this case, the student-athlete was instructed to remove the poster from her social networking site and a cease-and-desist letter was sent to Charley’s cousin.
