AMES, Iowa – Freshman JD Miller recorded his first career double-double Saturday night, but No. 13 Iowa State withstood a TCU push midway through the second half to record a hard-fought 92-83 decision inside Hilton Coliseum.

The Rundown
In a game that could have gone either way in the second half, the Horned Frogs gave the No. 13 ranked team in the country all they wanted, pulling within seven at the 6:13 mark, but couldn’t make enough plays down the stretch. The Frogs, now 11-16 overall and 2-12 in the Big 12, out-rebounded the Cyclones Saturday, 43-31. TCU also held a 25-5 advantage in second-chance points, while outscoring Iowa State off the bench, 14-0.

In his first career start, Miller led the Frogs on the night, scoring a career-high 19 points on 7-of-12 from the field, while grabbing 11 rebounds. His 11 boards were the most since the freshman grabbed 12 at Washington in December. Malique Trent followed, scoring 17 points, while Chauncey Collins filled up the stat sheet with 16 points, which included a 4-for-8 showing from behind the arc. Vladimir Brodziansky rounded out the Horned Frog notables, dropping 10 points and eight rebounds.

Iowa State (19-8; 8-6 Big 12) was carried by Georges Niang’s 27-point outing. Deonte Burton was just as solid, recording a double-double of his own with 23 points and 14 rebounds.

TCU would score the first four points of the second half as Miller picked up right where he left off the opening frame, scoring during the early stages. The Frogs would continue to climb within four at 44-40, but Iowa State would push its lead to 59-42 within a blink of an eye off a 15-2 run.

Back-to-back three’s by Brandon Parrish and Collins with a little over 11 minutes remaining in the second half made it a 61-54 ballgame. TCU would cut it to seven at 72-65 following a three ball from Miller at the 7-minute mark, but that was as close as the Frogs would get the rest of the way.

Iowa State jumped out to a 15-5 lead in the opening stages of the first half, but Trent would have nothing of it, burying his second three of the game to inch the Frogs closer with 16:08 on the clock. A few plays later, Chris Washburn scored off the glass to make it a 19-10 ballgame midway through.

Following a dunk by Miller, Brodziansky would make it a 22-14 game at the 10:43 mark, scoring on a turn-around floater inside the paint. By the time Trent connected for a three at the 9:23 mark, TCU was in the midst of an 11-0 run to pull within one at 22-21.

Miller would score six-straight down the stretch, but Iowa State would take a 44-36 lead into intermission.

Quote of the Game
Trent Johnson
“Our effort and our ability to follow the game plan offensively and defensively was good. We had two good practices coming into this. We played probably as good as we can play, with a couple of breakdowns. And that’s what happens when you play people who are pretty good.”
