TCU Falls Short at No. 10 West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.Chauncey Collins matched a career-high by scoring 20 points Saturday afternoon, but it wasn’t enough as TCU fell to No. 10 West Virginia, 73-42.

 

The Rundown
Collins scored a game-high 20 points on 7-of-15 from the field, including 3-of-6 from deep. With his 20-point outing, the sophomore has now posted two-straight games of 20 points against the Mountaineers. He also scored in double-figures for a third-straight contest and the ninth time in 12 league games.

 

With the loss, TCU moved to 11-14 overall and 2-10 in Big 12 action. West Virginia improved to 20-5 overall and 9-3 in league play. On Saturday, the Frogs played their eighth opponent either ranked or receiving votes in their last 12 games.

 

The Mountaineers saw both Esa Ahmad and Jonathan Holton go for 14 points apiece, respectively. Devin Williams tallied a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

 

For the game, TCU held WVU to only 37.5 percent from the field, including a 9-for-28 showing in the second half. The Frogs also limited the Mountaineers to only four made three’s the entire game on 16 attempts.

 

Malique Trent put TCU on the board early in the second half as the Purple and White continued to cut into the WVU deficit with 17:48 on the clock. A few minutes later Brandon Parrish would score off a dish from Chris Washburn and the Frogs appeared poised to rally midway through the period.

 

The Frogs pulled within 48-30 midway through as Collins scored on a fast break. The sophomore would score five-straight at the 8-minute mark to make it a 54-35 ballgame, but West Virginia would hold strong the rest of the way.

 

The two teams went back and forth the first couple of trips of the game, but WVU was able to jump out to an 11-2 lead until Collins scored five-straight to make it a 13-7 ballgame with 15:12 on the clock. The sophomore would drop his second three of the game a few plays later to inch TCU closer at 22-10 midway through the opening frame. In all, Collins scored 10 of the Purple and White’s first 12 points of the contest.

 

Midway through Collins would flush home a dunk and then watch as JD Miller drove to the hole and found pay-dirt to make it a 10-point game at 24-14 with 8:57 remaining in the period. The Frogs would continue to battle the rest of the half, but West Virginia was able to take a 41-22 lead into intermission.

“Well for the most part we had one guy that I thought showed up and competed a little bit. It had nothing to do with his 20 points, but I thought Chauncey (Collins) did as good of job defensively as he’s done all year. I thought his overall competitiveness once they made runs was encouraging.”
