The Courier: Former Conroe baseball star Cashner has jersey retired

Andrew Cashner can remember sitting in class at Conroe High School, waiting for the final bell to ring every afternoon.

It was always a welcome sound, especially during baseball season, because it meant he got to spend time with his best friends and enjoy America’s pastime at one of its purest levels.

Cashner graduated from Conroe in 2005, and he’s now a Major League Baseball pitcher for the San Diego Padres. But despite all his success, those early memories are still some of his fondest when it comes to the game he loves most.

Cashner’s No. 9 jersey was retired during Conroe’s scrimmage against Montgomery on Friday evening at Elmore Field. He joins legendary coaches Mike Ferrell and Frank Romero, and former player Zak Kahn — who died in a traffic accident in 1999 — as the only four people to have their numbers retired by the program. …
