No. 2 TCU men’s tennis reaches quarters at ITA National Indoor

From staff reports

The No. 2 TCU men’s tennis team opened the ITA National Indoor Team Championship by defeating No. 12 Illinois on Friday afternoon at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.

The Horned Frogs (4-1) won the doubles point after Cameron Norrie and Trevor Johnson came away with a tiebreaker victory on Court 1. TCU then won three singles matches against the Illini (4-2) to seal the 4-0 victory and move into the quarterfinals for only the fourth time in school history and first time since 2001.

TCU had singles wins by Jerry Lopez and Johnson before freshman Alex Rybakov sealed the victory by beating No. 10-ranked Jared Hiltzik 6-4, 6-2.

“Our boys learned from our Cal loss and they were ready to battle from the first point in doubles and singles,” TCU coach David Roditi said. “Illinois is a very good team and they are well coached with a lot of experience indoors. I am very proud of the way our guys came out playing.”

TCU will face No. 4 seed USC in Saturday’s quarterfinals at either 2:30 p.m. or 5:30 p.m.
