DMN: Why cornerback is an area of need for TCU following national signing day

TCU’s 2016 recruiting class filled a lot of needs — and that’s the first takeaway coach Gary Patterson addressed during his signing day presser.

“Well, for us, it was a big class. You guys know how I am, I don’t get overly excited about recruits. I am, but I’m not — you know, I always say ‘paper tigers’ and blah, blah, blah. This was one of those classes where we were able to — we graduated some guys, and we were able to go out and fill needs.”

Still, Patterson would have liked one more signature.

Because of an undisclosed injury to standout freshman Julius Lewis, Patterson and his staff pushed for another cornerback’s signature late in the process.

“We were short [on] corners and yesterday, we lost one for the season in our offseason program — probably,” Patterson said last Wednesday, “and so the corner position, we really tried to go out and find one more in this class, but just weren’t able to pull it off.” …
