FORT WORTH, Texas — TCU nearly erased a 25-point second half deficit but the upset bid came up short against No. 4/4 Baylor on Wednesday night at the Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena in an 81-75 loss.

TCU (12-11, 4-8) outscored Baylor 37-18 in the fourth quarter to help take a 25-point deficit in the third quarter down to six in the final minute of the game before time ran out on the TCU comeback.

Senior Zahna Medley had 24 points, sophomore AJ Alix had 18 points, senior Veja Hamilton had 12 points and senior Caitlin Diaz had 11 points to lead the Frogs in their comeback attempts.

Trailing 63-38 heading into the fourth quarter, TCU opened the fourth quarter on a 9-1 run and later used an 8-0 run to pull within 13 with 3:20 to go. Eventually the Frogs pulled within six in the final minutes thanks to a combination of improved defense and poor foul shooting from the Bears.

No. 4/4 Baylor (24-1, 11-1) was forced into 20 turnovers and held to 37.5 percent shooting in the second half as TCU mounted their comeback. In the fourth period, TCU got 10 points off six Baylor miscues and allowed the Bears to hit just 2-of-11 shots while they were 14-of-23 from the free throw line. TCU shot 11-of-16 in the fourth quarter with Medley getting 16 and Alix getting 13 in the fourth quarter.

TCU’s 75 points were the second most scored against the Bears this season and the most in a Big 12 Conference game.

Baylor’s Nina Davis led the Bears with 19 points after being held without a field goal in the first meeting between the teams earlier this season.

QUOTE OF THE GAME
“What we talked about in our timeouts was playing with pride,” said head coach Raegan Pebley. “Being a part of TCU is about that. We’re representing more than just our team, we’re representing Fort Worth, we’re representing our university. Don’t play to the scoreboard, play to our process, and commit to it. It’s not necessarily that we didn’t have that before, but we were producing now more out of it. We’ve got great shooters on the floor. In that fourth quarter, shots fell for us that in the first half, had a couple more of those fallen, especially at key moments in the game … you see a little more momentum built up.”

TCU Postgame Quotes vs. Baylor

Feb. 10, 2016Recap |  Final Stats |  Notes |  USATSI Photo Gallery  |  Photo Gallery

TCU Head Coach Raegan Pebeley

Opening statement:
“First I just want to commend the crowd. I loved our crowd, and getting that kind of support here at TCU is something we want to continue to build on. Fourth quarter was really important for us to play that way. Not only for this game, but moving forward for the next game. Baylor’s points in the paint are a problem for everybody they play and they were definitely a problem for us. They just keep rolling one big in after another, and they produce and they’re patient with it. I was pleased with our fourth quarter effort.”

On the difference in the fourth quarter:
“What we talked about in our timeouts was playing with pride. Being a part of TCU is about that.

On the team’s process:
“We’re process focused. We look at everything. We look at first quarter, second quarter, post play, perimeter play, offense, defense, how we huddle, how we connect with each other on the floor. We don’t take moral victories out of anything but we will always evaluate, self-evaluate how we’re committed to the process. I felt like in the first half Baylor got offensive rebounds, obviously. And those who follow Baylor closely know that that’s at least a third of their offense is second chance opportunities. We just have to keep getting better and adding more depth and size to help us combat that.”

On playing against Baylor’s size:
“Size isn’t an issue, it’s size combined with skill, and then guards that know when and how to give them the ball. Size, you can compete against size without skill and really make that an advantage for us. They’ve got Mompremier, Khadijah, Higgins I know didn’t even play tonight, and then obviously Kalani Brown. They’ve got skilled post players. They maximize what they produce. What they can produce.”

On combating Baylor defensively:
“We went small a little bit just to try and speed the game up, we were able to press a little bit and that forced them I think to change their lineup. We were fouling. We knew that there were players on the floor that didn’t have high field goal percentages, so a little bit of a hacky sack situation. Sometimes they still got an offensive rebound in those situations, but we needed to lengthenf the game to give ourselves a chance.”

TCU Senior Guard Zahna Medley

On the fourth quarter:
“I think it just allows us to build confidence going into the next game. I think we needed to see some shots fall for us and go into the net for some of the players. Just in the end coming together and just having that great chemistry will build toward the next game.”

On difference in her play in the fourth quarter:
“Really just my teammates and my coaches talking to me. They were just telling me, “Z I don’t care how many shots you miss, I still want you to shoot.” So honestly my teammates talking to me and giving me the confidence to not hesitate to taking more shots.”

Baylor Head Coach Kim Mulkey

Performance of defense in the fourth quarter:
“As disappointed in a basketball team I’ve been in a loss, you’re 23, 26 I don’t know how much we got up by, and call it not respecting the score, call it whatever you want to call it. No leadership, just going through the motions, and I don’t want to take anything away from TCU because they never quit. But if you’re going to be the number four team in the country then you need be putting the nail in the coffin and we did not do that tonight. Fouls and stopping the clock, missing free-throws, and we are very fortunate that we had a big enough lead to get out of here with a win and it starts with returning players because I really thought that the two freshmen bigs gave you something tonight, I thought Kristy gave you at least half of a game, but other than that we have to do better.”

Kristy Wallace and Beatrice Mompremier performance and overall team performance:
“It was the way the game was unfolding and we had to get Beatrice off the floor because of free-throws, and Alexis Jones doesn’t know what a pivot foot is tonight and she had seven turnovers and it’s the returning older players that to me, did not perform well tonight. When the games on the line, and you’re trying to win and get better, well we won the game but that this win was as disappointing I’ve been of a team during one half.”

TCU’s Performance:
“They didn’t do anything different, they played man to man, came down made some shots, got to the foul line, but nothing anything different than the rest of the game. We quit scoring and we were turning it over, I can’t tell you that it was something TCU did, TCU didn’t quit. TCU didn’t quit and that I will compliment for.”

Kristy Wallace’s Performance:
“She played a good half. But then her defense went downhill for the rest of the game. But she wasn’t the only one and normally I would take the blame for losing leads like that when you sub too much but I didn’t sub anybody into that ball game tonight who didn’t need to be out there. But we took a step backwards as a basketball team tonight. And it was all of the older players who did not show leadership tonight, “no give me that ball were okay”, none of that was out there tonight. They were just going through the motions out there, had a big lead and were okay.”

Out Scoring and Out Rebounding TCU tonight:
“Well we are bigger than TCU, we have big post players, two freshmen who are 6’7” and 6’4”. We are going to have post touches, we are not going to shoot the three’s like everyone else in the conference does because we have big players inside.”

Problems In Tonight’s Game:
“Foul trouble, turnovers, just a little bit of everything. And TCU just did not quit and they never went away and we got really comfortable out there.”
