National signing day has come and gone, and TCU now looks forward to spring football. Gary Patterson and his staff assembled a top-25 recruiting class (No. 23 according to the 247Sports Composite). At the time of the announcement of their class on signing day, the Horned Frogs ranked 21st nationally — the highest ranking for a TCU recruiting class in program history.

Bleacher Report national recruiting analyst Damon Sayles — follow him on Twitter here – helped break it all down in a Q&A. Here are some of the highlights:

Question: I noticed you ranked TCU 23rd in your 2016 recruiting class rankings, and much has been said about Patterson and his staff signing as many highly rated players as they did. Are you surprised by what TCU accomplished?

Sayles: Was I surprised? Not really. … TCU’s been very successful in the Big 12. The Peach Bowl year, obviously, was the one — was the big deal for Gary Patterson and his staff, and these kids, they see what can happen; they see what can be expected. Was I surprised? Not really, not really. They got some good guys out of the bunch. … I think eight four-stars total. It’s a good haul for them. As far as how we came up with our rankings, what I did was just kind of monitor how everything was going with each recruiting site and pretty much came up with our own brand. …
