TCU Claims Smallbore Championship
FORT WORTH – TCU claimed a two-point victory over Alaska to take home the smallbore conference championship on Day 1 of the Patriot Rifle Conference Championships being held at the TCU Rifle Range.
The Horned Frogs fired a match-best 2,326, edging out Alaska’s score of 2,324. TCU put two shooters, Rachel Garner and Nicole Hankey, through to the final and had two other solid performances from Hannha Black and Sally Li to help clinch the program’s first smallbore conference championship.
Garner advanced to the final with the second-best qualifying score of 584. She ultimately finished third overall after shooting a 444.6 in the final. Hankey’s 582 was seventh after the qualifier and she held that spot after firing a 402.2 in the final.
Li’s 581 was among the top eight scores in the competition, but she lost the center shot tie-breaker (25-30) to the eventual individual champion from Air Force, David Higgins.
Performing well and also firing a top-eight score was Barrett Ray, who shot a 582. She was not eligible for the final due to conference rules allowing only six predetermined shooters from each team to be eligible for the final.
TCU will look to hold onto the top spot and claim its first conference championship on Sunday when the teams will shoot the air rifle portion of the championships. Relays are slated to start at 7:45 a.m. with the final set for 1:15.
