Wrapping up the positions for 2008 are the special teams and there is probably not a position the coaches are more unsure how they will perform on the field than this one. Replacing punter Derek Wash will be a redshirt freshman Anson Kelton and replacing kicker Chris Manfredini will be a true freshman Ross Evans. Also lost will be one of the better punt returners in the nation last year in Brian Bonner and there is uncertainty about the return of the teams leading kick returner Donald Massey. Lots of new faces on special teams.
Depth chart:
Kicker
Ross Evans-may turn out to be the single most important signee in the class of 2008. Highly regarded kicker from Burnet ranks number 2 in Texas career field goals with 37.
Drew Combs-All Mark May team in 2007 and will handle most of the kick-off duties.
Kevin Sharpless-walk-on from Conroe.
Punter
Anson Kelton-RSFR from Aledo where he was all-state. Bigger than many of the lineman at 6-4/260 and also played at DE in HS. Impressive during spring drills.
Landry Lawson-walk-on from Pantego Christian.
Punt Returns
Jeremy Kerley-explosive and exciting runner. TCU has not had a punt returned for a TD in 73 games, Kerley may end that streak.
Nick Sanders-A playmaker in HS will get some opportunities again this fall.
Bud Patterson-key returns last season helped Bastrop to the finals.
Kick Returns
Aaron Brown-speed to turn it up and take it all the way.
Ryan Christian-had three returns in 2007 and averaged over 23 yards per return.
Jason Teague-JUCO transfer may take over the top spot by mid-season.
Deep Snapper
Clint Gresham-Transfer from Arkansas and key contributor in 2007.
Sean Haight-walk-on from San Diego
Needs for the class of 2009
Coaches for the first time have both a freshman scholarship player at punter and kicker and unless something drastic happens do not look for another signee at these positions for the next three years.

With ten seniors and juniors on the offensive line depth chart for 2008 this group could be one of the more experienced lines in almost a decade. Combine that with good size across the board and being led by Rimington candidate Blake Schlueter and Junior Marshall Newhouse, expect this group to be a solid anchor for the offense.
LT
70 Marshall Newhouse 6-3 317 Jr.-starter since his freshman season, they don’t come much better than Newhouse.
63 Heath Raetz 6-5 315 Sr.-Injuries have been a problem, but a very good player when healthy. Could move to starting RT.
6-5 315 66 Robert Clark 6-6 255 Sr.-tough competitor and shows well for his size. was backup to Newhouse all last season.
LG
60 Preston Phillips 6-6 293 Sr.-became starter when Matty Lindner was injured last season.
78 Josh Vernon 6-2 295 So.-former center saw some PT in 2007 and is expected to compete for a lot more time in 2008.
77 Spencer Thompson 6-4 270 RFr.-another converted center and has developed quickly. Needs to add some bulk but had a good spring.
C
75 Blake Schlueter 6-3 272 Sr.-Potential All-American and second to Newhouse in knockdowns and overall grading in 2007.
50 Tyler Marrou 6-5 268 Jr.-Former TE from Calallen and tough competitor.
76 Jake Kirkpatrick 6-3 273 So.-only 3rd season playing football last year and continues to develop. Great overall athlete and should take over the spot once Schlueter leaves.
RG
65 Giles Montgomery 6-5 295 Sr.-Fiery competitor and drives well. Has developed into a solid OL.
73 Josh Karlin 6-4 280 Jr.-Walk-on from kansas and saw PT behind Montgomery last season.
72 Kyle Dooley 6-3, 310, Fr., RS-another walk-on from Nebraska and expected to push hard for PT.
RT
79 Nic Richmond 6-8 298 Jr.-Very good athlete and great size. Saw limited action last season and is in a battle with Cannon for PT.
61 Marcus Cannon 6-5 319 So-Had a good spring and will push Richmond hard.
Zach Roth 6-5 298 Jr.-JUCO transfer and is expected to compete right away.
Others:
62 Jeff Olson OT 6-4 253 RFr-Former TE and needs to add bulk, but a great compeitor and may move quickly into the depth chart in 2008.
53 Ryan Wyatt OG 6-3 286 Jr.-walk-on from Smithson Valley
71 Austin Sulak OL 6-1 290 Fr.-walk on from Cameron.
Incoming Class:
OT Trevius Jones Tyler Lee, 6-5/300/5.21 Great size & footwork, injury set him back his JR year but fully recovered, TSWA All-State Pre-season SuperPrep, TXprep 100 Seniors to Watch, Jim Stefani’s #13 ranked OL in Texas, Star-Telegram Texas Top 100(offers include: LSU, Nebraska, Texas Tech, OK St., Colorado, Baylor)
http://64.237.99.126/oldclips/2008BA007.wmv
OT (JUCO) Zach Roth 6-5/290/4.94 Garden City, KS Originally from Holcomb, KS, 1st team all-Jayhawk Conference tackle, All-State as a DL in HS.
OL James Fry 6-4/265 Smithson Valley, TX TSWA 3rd team All-State
C Blaize Foltz 6-4/295/5.02 Rose Hill, KS Al State DT and OL. Has made tremendous strides in development the past year. At the Nike combine in March 2007 he was 6-2.5/255 and timed a 5.75 40, in December he came in for the scouts at 6-4/292 and ran a 5.02 in the 40. Hard working kid and is a starter on the basketball team.
Needs for the class of 2009:
Losing 5 & 5 juniors off the depth chart the next 2 saesons and have 4 incoming freshman and one additional signee developing so the demands are there for a decent size class in 2009 and getting early commits from Ty Horn and John Woolridge have definitely been a good start. At least one JUCO would help a lot with experienced depth.
Commits:
- OT Ty Horn 6-5/265 Waco, TX (Midway) First team all district player drawing heavy interest from TAMU & UH also. named as the top CenTex recruit for 2009 by the Waco Tribune.
- OL John Wooldridge 6-5/285 Bellaire, TX (Episcopal)
Offers:
- OG Anthony Mackey 6-3/275 Copperas Cove, TX All-State 4A, had 75 pancake blocks and 54 decleats, and no sacks allowed, recently won Five Hills power lifting invitational and beat Logan Brock by a foot to win all-district discus championship.
- OG Nick Ash 6-5/270/5.3 Keller, TX Scout Inc. evaluation:Ash is an offensive tackle that will need to work on the technical part of the game. He looks the part at 6′5″ and 270 pounds and carries his weight well. Displays quickness off the ball and has good initial leg drive; needs to keep churning the legs and stay after the defender till the whistle blows. Comes off the ball too high most of the time; legs come together and is often face mask to face mask with the defensive man instead of mask in the frame of the body. Must become a better knee bender and sink his hips. Could be more powerful with the hands. Often times absorbs the defender instead of delivering a punch with the hands; needs to lock on to the defensive lineman. Should do the same on pass protection; accepts the pass rusher instead of violently giving a solid first blow delivery. Fits into double team quickly but is too tall and shoulders aren’t always square but does get good movement due to size and leg drive. Cutoff blocking is decent; but should get his head across the defensive man. Demonstrates ability to get to level two but needs to lock on to and sustain downfield blocks. Sometimes takes a false step or oversteps when blocking; loses position on reach block and defender often gets into body. Ash is a big, good looking athlete that needs to play with more consistency. He must use his hands more and play with better leverage. He has decent mobility but needs to continue to work on foot agility.
- OG Carneal Ainsworth 6-4/300/5.1 Baton Rouge, LA (Parkview Baptist) ESPN150 Watch List, DandyDon #6 player in LA and former teammate of Clay Spencer & Jordan Free who TCU offered from the class of 2008. Attended LSU Junior Day and was expected to commit but didn’t get the offer. High Interest in LSU and Alabama, From Scout Inc: Ainsworth is a physical lineman that is a productive offensive guard. Even though he’s big enough in terms of weight, his height limits him to the guard position. Really is a good technician. Good short step rarely gets him out of position on the drive block. Comes out low with good leverage and power angles. Only weakness in base blocking is tendency to not strike more with the hands. Likes to block with the chest; this will not work at the next level. Nice leg drive once contact is made and really stays after the defender. Pulls and traps with authority and does a good job of driving legs on contact; good finisher. Shows effort getting downfield even though mobility isn’t the greatest; makes up for lack of foot speed by hustling and going till whistle blows. Gets a little angular on the double team; needs to fit into block and get hip to hip with teammate to make the block more effective in driving the defensive lineman off the football. Pass setting is solid, gets back quick in good relationship to pass rusher. Needs to really work on hands and keep chest away from defender. Must sit back and show some patience in order to not get over-extended. Ainsworth is a very solid offensive guard that has the attitude and work ethic to be a valuable collegiate offensive lineman.
- JUCO OT Anthony Morgan 6-4/325/5.3 Corsicana, TX (Navarro) Originally out of Lancaster and was Honorable Mention All-SWJCFC his freshman year at Navarro.
Others:
- OG Riley Spencer 6-6/263 Hesston, KS Offers include Miami. From Scout, Inc: Spencer is a raw talent at the offensive tackle position that will probably play guard at he next level. He has great height but is a little light in the pants at this point. Shouldn’t have any trouble putting on some pounds by his freshmen year of college. Comes off the ball low and hard but needs to improve the technical part of drive blocking. Puts too much weight on his toes while in stance. This causes two major problems. First of all, he can’t get his legs and hips underneath on the fire out losing both power and balance. Secondly, it becomes difficult to block a defensive man that moves. Not afraid of contact but sometimes delivers with shoulders instead of hands resulting in a loss of leverage and body control. Needs to concentrate on the snap count; is sometimes a half a count slow off the football. Runs pretty well and is a good puller. Turns upfield to find defender but again loses balance at times. Gets movement in short yardage situations because he can “root hog” the defensive linemen off the line of scrimmage. Pass protection is an issue until he sits back more in his stance in order to pass set with quickness and at proper angle. Cannot lunge at pass rusher and needs to use hands as a weapon, not absorb the defender. Spencer has some athletic talent and has a great attitude. Gives effort and always hustles. Should get stronger in the lower body while continuing to work on the technical part of the game.
- Ben Hughes C 6-5/260/4.9 Fort Bend, TX (Austin) Son of former Baylor All-American Michael Hughes and has added 20 lbs since end of 2007. Heady player and coaches tripped to his spring game to get a much closer look at him and will possibly bring him in for an offer soon.
- Patrick Leonard 6-7/270 Midland, TX (Midland)
- Daniel Moore, Lexington, 6-6, 302 (1st team all-state 2A)
- Tobyn Large 6-2/275/5.10 Montgomery, TX
- Ryan Lee OT 6-6/240 Hamilton, TX
- Stavion Lowe 6-5/294/5.2 Brownwood, TX
- Jermaine Roberts C 6-4/305 Garland, TX (South) hard working and highly rated. DFW area Top 50, can play either side of the line. Another great South Garland athlete. Scout, Inc 150 Watch list. their notes on him:Roberts is a prospect to keep an eye on as his possesses some nice upside. He is a big defensive tackle who can clog up run lanes and cause some problems. On paper he is big and on film he looks even bigger than his listed measurable. He reminds us some of a baby Steve Entman who was a excellent defensive tackle for the Washington Huskies at one time. While Entman terrorized offenses it looks like Roberts may be better suited for a position change in college and move to gaurd. On defense you love his motor and he is a tough dude to try and move off the ball. He does a good job versus double teams of not only holding his ground, but of also being able to get low and split them. He has a solid get-off and when he comes off the ball low and gets into a blocker he has little trouble of pushing his opponent into the back-field. He is good with his hands and does a solid job of being able to shed. He can get some penetration if he can get on shoulder of a blocker and push his way up-field, but is not a kid that will blow by blockers. You are impressed by how well he runs for a big guy when you see him huff it to the perimeter in puruit. He can bull rush in passing situations, but if he does not get his man moving backwards he struggles to get free and pressure the quarterback. Roberts has some merit as a big two-gapping defensive tackle, but his best chance to get the most out of his ability will likely be on offense in college. He is physical enough to get into blockers and if he can keep his pads down consistently just blow defenders off the ball in run game. You could see him pulling and trapping and even doing a good job of climbing up to the second level. As a pass blocer he will likely need some more time to adjust, but should be able to lock onto and mirror a rusher in the short area. Roberts is a good prospect with some versatility. He may get some looks on defense, but we would not be surprised to see him enter college as a guard.
- Trent Schuchart OC 6-2/265/5.5 Pleasanton, TX
- Jacob Smith Crowley, TX
- LaAdrian Waddle 6-5/315 Colombus, TX Scout, Inc Top 150 watch list, their notes on him:Waddle is a mountain of a man at offensive tackle. Over three hundred fifteen pounds with good height he looks massive in pads. Must be careful not to gain anymore weight until his foot agility improves. Is usually fairly quick off the ball but often takes a false step or understeps. Completely smothers smaller defensive linemen once in to them. Extremely powerful due to size and follows the initial contact with good leg drive. Sometimes gets beat underneath due to improper first step. Wipes out his side of the line of scrimmage on the down block. Comes off to second level with some authority and gets into linebacker but often can’t sustain block due to being too high. Tends to lose some body control when his legs straighten out. Mauls opponent on the double team block with power and leg drive. Decent at pulling but needs to move quicker and lower. Usually gets turned upfield but often misses block due to loss of body control. Effective on the trap block even though plays too high. Pass protection can only be accomplished from a “two” point stance where setting is quicker. Defenders have trouble getting around such a huge specimen and the long arms are effective in keeping pass rusher away from body. Must be careful to not be beaten underneath. Waddle has real potential because he moves well for such a big player. If he works on trimming down and improve foot quickness and technique he will be a highly sought after lineman.
- Jerrell Watkins 6-3/250 Channelview, TX
- Brock Wempa 6-3/275 Royce City, TX (all-state as Soph) DFW area Top 50
- Joseph Williams 6-2/270/4.96 Houston, TX Strake Jesuit
As mentioned Horn & Woolridge are a solid start to the class. Of the offers all will be tough to land and the rest of the class seems to be uncertain. Ben hughes get little attention but may be the next in line along with Spencer. Stavion Lowe is a teammate of Casey Pachall at Brownwood and highly rated, but unsure if he gets an offer.

Lets just hope the defensive line of 2008 fairs better than the defensive line of 2007. In 2007 coaches lost James Vess to reasons only he and they will disclose and then they saw a potential top 10 draft pick dwindle his career to not even being able to sign a free agent contract. Problems on the defensive line have continued into 2008 as Allen Christopher who played in 24 games in the last 2 seasons decided he would rather be back in East Texas.
Well at least Vess is back for one more season and we have Cody Moore along with Kelly Griffin anchoring the middle, but the corners will have a lot of ground to make up. Jerry Hughes and Matt Panfil have shown great progress, but the future really lies with Braylon Broughton and Jeremy Coleman.
Depth chart:
WDE:
Jerry Hughes-JR shows good speed on the corner and decent cover skills.
Clarence Leatch-Soph with limited experience but huge upside.
Jeremy Coleman-tremendous athlete and will get PT on the corner and in the middle. His ability to drive and elevate sets him apart.
SDE
Matt Panfil-had tough shoes to fill and did an adequate job in 2007. Will see lots of pressure for PT from 2s and 3s.,
Wayne Daniels-Took a year off to develop and fans should start getting excited about this young man. Can play inside or out.
Braylon Broughton-Another highly anticipated talent and this RSFR made end up being one of the best.
NT
James Vess-suspensed for critical mistake in 2007 and is back with a vengance. Had a tremendous spring.
Kelly Griffin-Started every game in 2007 and will be basically another starter in 2008
Cory Grant-has really come on strong and may pucsh hard for more PT at either interio line position.
DT
Cody Moore-Has been solid for years and look for him to be the strength of the DL.
John Fonua-Will apply pressure from the middle, needs to learn how to play the run better.
Henry Nuitei-Cousin of Fonua and has really started to show his potential. The interio line looks to be a solid 3 deep.
Others:
DE Allen Christopher-doubtfull that he will contribute in 2008.
Needs for the class of 2009:
Vess, Moore. Panfil & Fonua will need to be replaced. Solid currently on the interior so no JUCO expected there however the corner may be some concern. Possibly one JUCO DE but really need some youth for the future. Getting the Maud 3 was huge for this staff as they fill a huge void with very good talent and the potential of Nate Bonsu may really complete this class.
Commits:
DT Ray Burns 6-1/290/5.3 Maud, TX 1st Team All-State OL, 1st Team All-Smoaky EastTexas (all divisions) 87 knockdowns, 23 pancakes, 22-TFL, 14-Hurries, 7-CF, 1-FR, All-State DL, District MVP, offers include Arkie, TAMU & Tuls http://texasfootball.com/mediamgr/player.php?sid=4766&s=1204738206-978434477
DE James Dunbar 6-6/290/4.79 Maud, TX 1st Team All-District DL, also played FB, UT junior day invitee, offers include Bay, Hou, TAMU and Tuls. Travis Stewart DCTF on Dunbar: James Dunbar DE, Maud
I had heard quite a bit of talk about Dunbar over the past few days/weeks, and about how great his skill set was when you consider how few 1A players go on to the DI level. Well, after watching his tape, I can say I agree. He’s big, and he still looks like he could use a little more work to chisel that frame down, but he’s got uncanny athleticism and body control for someone of his size and, like former TCU DE Tommy Blake, he even totes the ball once in a while. He didn’t blow my socks off, but he’s certainly a great player and unquestionably lives up to his reputation. http://texasfootball.com/mediamgr/player.php?sid=4764&s=1204738206-978434477
DE Bryant House 6-4/265/4.9 Maud, TX All-State OL/DL All-Smoaky East Texas (all-divisions), 111 Knockdowns, 27 pancakes, offers include Arkie & Tuls http://texasfootball.com/mediamgr/player.php?sid=4765&s=1204738206-978434477
Offers:
DT Nate Bonsu 6-2/265/4.6 Allen, TX All region III and All Colin County DT. Extremely quick off the block and appears to be years beyond his age in development. Couldn’t find a lot of video on him, but he is #99 and here is some of the garland/Allen game. You’ll see him flying all over the place, but at around 2:28 in the video he makes a great play:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urDSyRkRuRs
Scout Inc evaluation:Bonsu comes across on film as a thickly built kid. He slightly lacks what you are looking for in ideals size wise, but you don’t worry about him too much being able to battle in the trenches. He has an adequate get-off and will flash some quickness. He is a physical kid that makes good initial contact. Does a good job of keeping leverage and can be tough to move off the ball. He will bring his hands, but needs to be more consistent and create more separation. This is where size may hurt him most in wingspan and being able to separate and shed. He at this point looks to be tougher versus the run. He can push a blocker back and cause a bubble. He moves well for a big guy and will consistently pursue to the ball and takes good angles. He is a solid wrap-up tackler. He has solid short-area change-of-direction skills. While Bonsu will flash some good tools and can be stout versus the run he is a very adequate pass rusher. He has the ability when he fires off the ball low to bull rush and collapse the pocket. He will get stuck chest-to-chest and struggles to separate. Needs to work on developing pass rush moves, but does not provide a lot of pressure if he can not physically move his man back. Bonsu is a solid player. Needs to keep developing his game to be a more well rounded defender, but can be a solid defender versus the run or wave player.
JUCO DE Delano Johnson 6-5/260/4.65 Visalia, CA (College of the Sequoias) Originally from Concord, NC offers include LSU. All-conference at West Hills, played TE and OT in HS.
Others:
Quinn Anthony 6-2/275 Rusk, TX A Texas Top 50
LaChristopher Anyiam DE/TE 6-4/250 Allen, TX
William Buckwalter 6-3/250 Bellaire, TX (Episcopal)
Randall Dent 6-4/270 Grand Prairie, TX (South)
Tevin Henderson 6-3/235 Conroe, TX (Oak Ridge)
Chris Jones Fort Worth, TX (Brewer)
Ian Knight 6-2/244/4.68 Wichita, KS (Heights)
Jason Korenek DE 6-3/200/5.05 Rockdale, TX
Benny Logan DE 6-3/238/4.8 Coushatta, LA (Red River) All-State and District Co-MVP
Reid McCann 6-3/220/4.8 Dallas, TX (Lake Highlands)
Chris McAllister 6-2/210/4.6 Converse, TX (Judson) 3rd team All-State
Charles Rigsby DT6-2/275/5.2Texarkana, TX (Liberty-Eylau)
Joe Robles 5-11/280 El Paso, TX (Riverside)
Albert Sparks DT 6-2/315/5.2 Irving, TX (MacArthur)
Grant Stonerook 6-2/2154.7 Arvada, CO (Ralston Valley)
Braylon Williams DE 6-4/230/4.9 New London, TX (West Rusk)
Joseph Williams DT 6-2/265/5.5 Houston, TX (Jesuit Strake)
Wes Williams DE 6-3/205 Houston, TX (Jesuit Strake
I fully expect that Nate will commit if he hasn’t already and that would fill the most immediate needs of the class. With some of the extra spots available coaches may add a JUCO such as Johnson, he is a tremendous athlete and could cover the youth currently at DE. The class appears to be virtually complete for the DL, but there are still some athletes such as Quinn Anthony from Rusk still out there.

At least one receiver position appears to be solid for the next few years and that is the tight ends. Shea Reagan leads this bunch and the senior may one of the best in the country if he stays healthy. Sophmore Evan Frosh and RSFR Logan Brock will add experience to the group and incoming freshmen Corey Fuller and Walker Dille may not get much playing time but show a lot of promise for the future.
Depth chart
Shea Reagan-averaging 19.7 yards per reception and his 1st 17 catches in his career went for 1st downs. Injuries have limited his playing time over the years else you would be hearing a lot more pub for him. Originally recruited as a QB.
Evan Frosch-had 5 receptions in 2007
Logan Brock-played QB in high school until injuries forced a position change his SR year in which he was all-state at TE.
Others:
Ryan Benge-JUCO transfer from Navarro
Robert Deck-walkon from Nolan HS.
Incoming freshmen:
Walker Dille-All State and all Houston area TE. Great hands and speed but needs to add some weight to his 6-3 frame.
Corey Fuller-1st Team All State and District MVP. At 6-5 and 219 needs to develop a little in the weight room but has great athleticism for his size. 110M hurdler in HS.
Needs for the class of 2009:
Lots of potential behind the SR but not the size coaches would like especially for the blocking TE. Not an area of huge need but they may go after a big JUCO TE. Made an early offer to Trey Graham who picked UT, there are currently no other offers out for TEs.
Others:
- Ryan Fitch Grand Prairie, TX (South) Scout Inc evaluation:Fitch is a rangy tight end prospect. Looks taller than his listed size and will need to get into a college weight program and add bulk. He looks on film to have a good wingspan and should be able to pack on additional needed size. He is a productive blocker. Makes adequate initial contact. Will flash the ability to get placement with his hands, generate some power from his hips, and take short choppy steps. When he does that he can create push off the ball in the run game. He needs to be more consistent in his technique. He can get overextended at times and needs to watch his pad level. He does a very adequate job of blocking down and needs to get better positioning. Does a solid job of being able to cut-off on the backside. Overall, he needs to be more consistent, but displays the ability to consistently get himself between the defender and the ball. Not a damaging blocker, but productive. He is a solid receiver. Displays a good initial take-off and has long strides. Not a burner but can get vertical some. Has good hands and can catch the ball away from his frame. Displays solid concentration and can make the tough grab. Fitch is a tight end with some upside. Needs to keep filling out his frame, but could develop into a solid well-rounded college tight end.
- Coby Goodwin 6-6/210 Cypress, TX (Cy-Fair) Scout, Inc evaluation:Goodwin is a tall lean tight end prospect. He has the ideal height, but will need to get into a college weight program and add significant bulk to his frame. He is a productive blocker that can make solid initial contact. When he gets locked on he can be tough to beat. Can get on his toes some and overextend. He is leverage disadvantaged and needs to generate more power from his lower body on contact. Does a solid job of being able to stay with his blocks. Does an adequate job of being able to step and seal a defender. Flashes the ability to quickly work up to the second level and get a piece of moving targets. He needs to add size and keep developing as a blocker, but that will be the strength of his game at the college level. He displays good hands and the ability to catch the ball away from his body with some consistency. Runs adequate routes and will do a solid job of selling a block before releasing into his route. He will be best in the short passing game as an outlet receiver. Lacks the speed to stretch the field. He will fight for yards, but will not make many defenders miss at the college level with the ball in his hands. Goodwin is a solid prospect. Needs to keep filling out, but can develop into a solid blocking tight end.
- Zack Parker Arlington, TX
JUCO:
TE Brett Acre 6-5/250 Coalinga, CA (West Hills)
TE Prizell Brown 6-4/258/4.65 Brenham, TX (Blinn)
Brown is a former all-region basketball player from Pflugerville Connally and turned down several offers to pursue his dream of playing TE. A very good athlete and has the size the coaches need and uses his body well.

The follow-up to the most uncertain position is probably one of the more solid positions for any team, the TCU linebackers. Even with the loss of David Hawthorne who signed a professional contract, the returning group of linebackers for the frogs is as good as they get. Starters Jason Phillips and Robert Henson are exceptional athletes and backups Tank Carder and Daryl Washington may even be better when they are done. Expect Henson & Phillips both to finish their careers at TCU with numerous awards and each will get a chance at the next level. Phillips who played QB in high school, started at safety and then shifted to fullback and finally settled in at LBer for TCU is already on numerous pre-season watch lists.
Depth chart:
MIKE
Jason Phillips-not much more to say about the young man except expect another great year from him. Solid individual on and off the field.
Tank “the crank” Carder-RSFR has already made a huge splash at ACS by winning the Defensive MVP during the THSCA all-star game in Fort Worth after his senior year in HS. One of the more anticipated first year players in quite a while.
Kris Gardner-Moved from linebacker to fullback and now back. Very good athlete and settling on a position will allow him to develop.
SAM
Robert Henson-Speed and aggression combined with better than decent cover skills make Henson a model strong-side backer.
Daryl Washington-a Robert Henson with possibly more speed and better cover skills. Could play at safety if needed.
Greg Burks-a true freshman and another linebacker with excellent safety skills. Injuries and position shifts in high school probably hampered his overall recruiting, but coaches found another excellent athlete to carry on the tradition.
Others:
Chris Goodson-originally recruited as a safety out of California JUCO, he took a RS season to develop learn the LBer spot and should see plenty of PT in 2008.
James Gleaton-SR walk-on from Early and has been a plus in development of the position.
Brennan Gordon-walk-on from New Orleans via Bishop Lynch. A great athlete and will possibly break through for some decent PT in 2008.
Alan Jones-RSFR walk-on from Austin
Needs in the class of 2009:
Losing Phillips and Henson after this season will definitely require the coaches to get 2 solid players this class. The focus has been on Austin Moss and Tanner Brock, but neither appear ready to commit so look for offers to continue to go out over the summer. The staff will make this a priority and may even go for a JUCO if they feel they don’t get 2 who can see PT soon.
Offers:
LB Tanner Brock 6-3/235/4.6 Coperas Cove 1st team all-state 4A as Soph & JR, Logan’s brother and both hard-working athletes. Stats: Sophomore: 229 tackles, 172 solos, and 23 tackles for loss, Junior: 227 tackles, 137 solos, 27 tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks. Scout, Inc evaluation (on their 150 Watch list):Brock is an outside linebacker prospect with great upside and all the physical tools needed to mold into a good one at the next level. Not overly flashy but is sound and does all the little things right. Great frame when projecting for the next level. He is tall, lean but athletically-built and should explode with bulk once he attacks a fulltime college weight training program. Reads his keys well and gets a good jump to the football. Most productive when playing in space and utilizing his long-stride and rangy body to chase sideline-to-sideline. This kid can cover a lot of ground with proper pursuit angles; overall range on run and pass support is good. Can get knocked off of his pursuit due to his lack of strength but does show proper hand technique keeping blockers off his body with his long arms when scraping. Displays good short-area acceleration when closing on ball carriers in space and is a solid tackler. Shows a good burst filling his middle run gaps when employed inside. Mirrors ball carriers well between the tackles displaying adequate redirection skill for a taller linebacker. However, he does flash difficulty taking on uncovered linemen at the point of attack. Leverage and lack of good strength and explosiveness at the point of attack is a concern. Not great at stacking and shedding. On the outside, he struggles at times breaking down in space and mirroring ball carriers; a bit stiff pursuing laterally. Not a real fast-twitched athlete, tends to build speed. With that said, he shows athleticism in coverage and great potential as an outside blitzer/vertical attacker with his frame and good straight-line speed. Overall, Block is a good prospect if a program has a year or two to develop him. Projects best as a strong side ‘backer. Could eventually grow into a defensive end with continued physical development or play the OLB spot in a 3-4.
LB Chris Williams 6-1/225/4.52 Abilene, TX Texas Top 50.
LB Austin Moss 6-3/208/4.65 Rockwall, TX (Heath) Formerly at South Garland but moved to Heath when his dad (Mickey Moss) changed coaching positions.

- Princeton Jackson 6-1/210 Houston, TX (Cypress Ridge) #13 LB in nation per Scout

- Jonathan Stewart 6-4/221/4.64 Shreveport, LA (Byrd)
- Darius Taylor 5-10/210/5.03 Mesquite, TX
- Tyler Washington 6-1/225 Cedar Hill, TX
- Cody Wilson 6-1/215 Tulsa, OK (Lincoln Christian)
JUCO
LB Dwayne Baziel 6-3/240/4.6 Cisco, TX
Getting even one of the three offers would be huge, but still have to think the coaches feel they may get two of the three which would really solidify the position for years to come. The depth at linebacker recruits is very good and having options such as Stewart, Poe, Jones and Jackson should allow the coaches to get two good players out of the high school ranks, however JUCO Baziel may be one of the better athletes available in the nation and tough to pass up if he qualifies.

There is probably not a position with so much potential and so many question marks on any team as is the wide receivers for the Horned Frogs. Jimmy Young, Jeremy Kerley and Bart Johnson have shown flashes of brilliance and nothing but question marks surround players such at Clint Renfro, Donald Massey and Walter Bryant. Because of the uncertainties that exist more than a few walk-ons or former walk-ons have made the depth chart, including William Cage, Curtis Clay, Ryan Christian, Bart Johnson and Tyler Luttrell. Also, all three first year players: Sam Shutt, Justin Moreaux and former JUCO all-american Marques Parker will be expected to have an immediate impact.
Depth Chart:
WR (Z)
Walter Bryant-injuries and other issues have hampered his development. The senior has come up big in tight situations and hopefully will be a solid go to guy in 2008.
Marques Parker-JUCO all-american, great athlete and intelligent player.
Curtis Clay-walk-on from Lockhart and had one catch in 2007, but is expected to see more PT in 2008. Had a very good spring.
WR (X)
Jimmy Young-Had 23 catches in 2007 and the longest play of the year for the frogs in his 70 TD reception against Stanford. Great hands and has shown the ability to make big plays and demonstrated by a brilliant catch in the Houston Bowl.
Jonathan Jones-RSFr had a very good spring and uses his 6-4 frame very well. Has great hands and good speed to go with his size and has many frogs fans excited about seeing him on the field in 2008.
Justin Moreaux-True incoming freshman was leading high school receiver in Louisiana in 2007. Has only played football a few seasons and may need time to develop further.
WR (H)
Bart Johnson-Originally a walk-on but his clutch receptions and highlight catches earned him a scholarship.
William Cage-Senior walk-on has been a consistent performer for the frogs.
Ryan Christian-Played at tailback in 2007 but has potential to become a true playmaker in 2008.
WR (Y)
Jeremy Kerley-Contributed as a true freshman in 2007 and is expected to play a huge role in the offense for 2008.
Tyler Luttrell-walk-on and son of former frog Mike Luttrell. Switched to WR after helping with the depth at QB.
Sam Shutt-incoming freshman with tremendous speed and athleticism.
Others
Clint Renfro-Sophomre with huge potential but has been extremely limited due to injuries.
Donald Massey-Senior with great speed but grade issues have him as a big question mark.
Emmanuel Asalou-sophomore walk-on from FW Dunbar with very good speed.
John Brown-walk-on from Overland Park, KS
Kagen Elenburg-JR walk-on from Jacksboro.
Austin Galifaro-JR walk-on from San Antonio
Davis Hinton-6-3/220 freshman from Midland.
Willie Leiss-FR walk-on from Hurst.
Billy Pizor-SO walk-on from Katy.
Garret Winsett-RSFR walk-on from Round Rock.
Needs in the class of 2009:
Only one senior scholarship player on the depth chart in 2008 and lots of youth on the team, but definitely some holes to fill. Expect at least two incoming freshman and coaches had a great start at filling those spots when A.J. Dugat announced his commit. His situation appears shaky at best so coaches will try to hold on to him while continuing to bring in two more for the position.
Commits:
WR A. J. Dugat 6-1/205/4.5 Dayton, TX Potential WR, CB, TB or Safety. Had 391 yards on 39 carries and 8 TDs rushing along with 67 catches for 957 yards and 14 TDs receiving. Played full-time on the corner for the D, took over at QB when Cody Green was hurt and returned punts as well. District MVP, Scout #74 recruit in the country and State Top 50 recruit. Texas Football analysis on Dugat after committing to the Frogs:TCU has been really active recently, and it just paid off in a big-time way — a big time offensive threat at wide receiver. The Horned Frogs landed Dayton WR A.J. Dugat, a wide receiver who is ranked in the state’s top 100 by most recruiting outlets and who blew up in 2007 on the outside after moving over from running back earlier in his career. He was a big reason Dayton went all the way to the state semifinals last season, as the speedy Dugat finished with eight rushing touchdowns (on only 39 carries!) and almost 1,000 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns. He was almost as good in 2006, too (706, 9 TDs).Dugat is a classic big play threat — he has breakaway speed, is difficult to tackle and reads his blockers well on those little slip screens people love to run these days. Perhaps his greatest asset is his ability to hit the hole in a defense (a skill that probably stems from his days as a RB), because when he finds the seam, he blows through it quick as a blink. He is a very talented young man, and if the Frogs can hold him, he could press for playing time very early.http://feedroom.gamedaytv.com/prepticket/?sid=100254&cid=10009&p=cowboys1&sessionIDPassed=z32g01q14xh2fj55qvtyfs45&bhcp=1&itemid=1001213303&catid=5750 http://s144.photobucket.com/albums/r180/mabethea/Video/?action=view¤t=6aa09314.flv
Offers:

WR Uzoma Nwachukwu 6-1/180/4.42 Allen, TX One of the best in the area, Texas Top 50, 41″ vert.
Others
- William Adams 6-0/175 Grand Prairie, TX (South) Texas Top 50

- Alonzo Jackson 6-1/170/4.7 Seattle, WA (O’Dea)
- Jerry Johnson 6-1/180/4.56 Waco, TX (Connally)
- Darius Jones 6-0/180 Marshall, TX
- Chayse Joubert 6-1/180/4.41 Arlington, TX (Grace Prep)
- James “Go Getter” Kelly 6-2/200/4.5 Flower Mound, TX will camp at TCU
- Glasco Martin 6-0/185/4.6 Round rock, TX (Stony Point)
- Kenric McNeal 6-1/180/4.38 Spring, TX Plays QB for Spring and will visit TCU this summer. Offers include Ariz, Ho, TAM, Missi, TeTe, Missori, Ric. Rated #33 WR by Scout.
- Jacob Morris WR/QB 6-2/175/4.50 Flower Mound Texas (District 6-5A offensive newcomer of the year honors after completing 76 of 148 passes ( 51.4%) for 1,192 yards, 8 TDs and 5 INTs)
- Sharrod Narcise 5-10/165 Beaumont, TX (Monsignor Kelly)
JUCO
WR Travis Cobb 6-0/180/4.4 Brenham, TX (Blinn) 39″ vert
WR Justin Jordan 5-11/190/4.41 Brenham, TX (Blinn)
As many questions as there are in TCU’s current roster, there is almost as many in the recruiting class of 2009. Is Dugat coming? Any chance at the kids offered? Who is next in line? We shall see with Dugat, but coaches seem to go through this every season and somehow hold on to the players. The new offense should attract more athletes at the receiver positions, but few have seen it in action. Of the offers, Randle, Scott and Nwachukwu, the Horned Frogs look to be long shots. Kenric McNeal is highly recruited and coming to visit, but he appears to be headed to TAMU. Coaches only need 2 but this may be the toughest 2 they go after this year.

Not a lot needs to be said other than Nick Sanders & Rafael Priest. Possibly the best tandem in the conference and one of the best ever at TCU. Both have great cover skills and are sure tacklers, Priest a little faster but Sanders can stick with almost any receiver. Alex Ibiloye & Greg McCoy are solid number 2 guys, both play agressive and have very good cover skills and new comers Bud Patterson and Jason Teague may push for lots of early PT, especially Teague who is a big back at 6-2/185 and a tremendous athlete.
Current depth chart:
LCB:
Nick Sanders-Starter for 2 straight seasons, solid tackler and pass defender.
Alex Ibiloye-agressive, hard tackler and played mostly on sprecial teams.
Jason Teague-All-American JUCO and still needs to complete schoolwork, but could be an impact player as soon as he arrives. Will have 3 years to play.
RCB:
Rafael Priest-starter for the 2 previous seasons, tied with Sanders for team INTs with 3, HM All Mountain West.
Greg McCoy-great athlete and will get additional PT on return team.
Bud Patterson-another great athlete and return specialist, Top 40 in Louisiana by Rivals.
Others:
Jercell Fort- solid athlete, but development hampered by swapping from RB to CB and still not sure where he finally plays.
Cameron Murphy-walk on from Miami, Fla
Thomas Ward-walk-on from Waco, TX
Needs in the class of 2009:
With no Seniors and 2 Juniors in the group the needs are more long term. Coaches will probably go for at least one very good CB to provide for future depth and prevent having to find 3 in the next class.
Offers:
CB Desmond Gardiner 5-11/180/4.5 Port Arthur, TX (Memorial) Highly recruited athlete who in his first season at Memorial had 47 tackles, 4 interceptions, 1 touchdown and 18 pass breakups and earned first team all-district honors.
CB/FS Steven Terrell 5-11/175/4.4 Allen, TX DMN player of the week after monster performance against Plano in 2007, 3.8 GPA. Scout, Inc Top 150 watch list. Their notes on him:Terrell brings good size, speed and athleticism to the table as a defensive back prospect. He is tall, rangy and well-defined. Could be developed at either corner or safety depending on a college%u2019s defensive system; his scheme versatility is sought-after. Fluid pedal and opens and turns smoothly for a taller DB. Very good initial quicks. Transitions fast and explodes out of his pedal breaking on underneath throws. Strong plant and drive skill allows him to generate deceptive power closing on the ball. Makes solid contact and is a strong tackler who is reliable in the open field. Displays great acceleration and range covering the whole field in both run and pass support. Good makeup speed and shifts gears well when the ball is in the air defending the deep throw. Consistently positions himself correctly when playing the high-point position and has a knack for making plays with good awareness and ball skills. Understands the concepts of zone coverage jumping and supporting the correct routes. While he initially mirrors well in off-man, his stem is a bit high and stiffness in his hips can be seen when he gets turned on double moves. Can let WRs slip behind him. Loses some in transition when turning to run in man-to-man schemes and is better playing the ball in front of him. Could excel as an underneath corner with his coveted size and straight-lined burst but range and instincts may be better suited at safety. Will need to fill out to get over the alley trash better; tends to get knocked off his pursuit. At times, he did not fill with great intensity or urgency when he had a clear angle to the ball carrier when pursuing laterally; will need to become more aggressive in run support to play in the box at the next level. Overall, Terrell possesses a fine blend of size, speed and burst as a DB and the physical and mental skills to mold into a solid player. Could start career off at corner but project he will slide back to safety as his body continues to physically develop.
Others:
- Josh Aubrey 5-10/171/4.5 Tyler, TX (Lee)
- Thomas Bates 5-11/170 Baytown, TX (Lee)
- Kenny Bowder CB 5-11/175/4.48 Round Rock, TX (Stony Point)
- Julian Dozer 5-9/167/4.4 Round Rock, TX (Stony Point) 56 tackles, 3 picks, 13 pbu, 3 blocked FGs, 1 punt block and 279 yds on 8 KRs
- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqeBd7edTt8
- Keivon Gamble 5-9/165 Dallas, TX (Madison)
- Colton Valencia 6-0/170 Fort Bend, TX (Hightower)
- Owen Michael Venson 5-10/170/4.42 Katy, TX
JUCO
CB Bryant Nnabuife 6-2/192/4.4 Brenham, TX (Blinn) Big back with great speed and 39″ lift
Gardiner & Terrell obviously the top choices and both will be a battle to sign. Dozer & Gamble are just behind them and getting one of the 4 would be a nice pick up for this group. Nnabuife is a great athlete also and may be tough to pass up if he wants to come to TCU.

Going into the 2007 season there was a lot of optimism, but also concern regarding having two inexperienced signal callers leading the team. That concern became real as the turnovers piled up early in the season as did the losses, however the coaches stuck to their plan and as the season progressed so did Andy Dalton and Marcus Jackson. The team finished on a high note with Dalton being named the MVP of the Houston Bowl and the QB situation appears to be now in good hands for a few more years, though depth is extremely light.
Current depth chart:
Andy Dalton-Completed 222 of 371 attempts for 2,459 yards, 10 TDs and 11 picks in 2007.
Marcus Jackson-Had a great spring and really pushed hard showing the coaches he could lead the offense if needed. Was 35 of 63 with 3 TDs and 1 pick in 2007.
Eric Herbel-Walk-on from McKinney still needs to add some size and strength.
Others:
Andy Bohlig-walk-on from Eden Prairie, Minn where he led his team to a state championship.
Cole Frederick-walk-on from Houston Christian.
Logan Brock-was QB at Copperas Cove his JR year until injuries allowed Robert Griffin a chance (OK, that is just being thrown in there).
Incoming freshman:
QB Chase “Yogi” Gallegos 6-1/185/4.55 Irving, TX Grace Prep transfer in 2006. In 2007 he was 227 of 382 with 15 picks, 2369 total yards and 15 TDs as Irving adjusted their offense to more passing. Had a very good showing at the Nike camp in Fort Worth that opened a lot of eyes. Good arm strength, good footwork and quick release. #4 QB & #57 ranked player in DFW per Dallas Morning News, Top 100 in Texas per Star-Telegram.
http://64.237.99.126/oldclips/2008BA106.wmv
Expect the staff to work hard at getting Gallegos up to speed on the offense before the summer is over.
Needs for class of 2009:
Depth is a very real concern for the future with Jackson a JR this coming season and the Frogs will have only one experienced QB for one more year after the class of 2009 finishes its true freshman year. The Frogs really need two good QBs in this class and took a huge step in that direction when Casey Pachall made his commitment.
Commits:
QB Casey Pachall 6-4/185/4.7 Brownwood, TX Texas Top 50, #21 recruit in the State by LSR, In 2007 110 carries 424 yards 3 TDs 85/182 46.7% 1,339 yards 9 TDs 9 INTs. Also offered by Notre Dame, Nebraska, Baylor, Houston & Arizona and turned down trip to UT junior days to come to TCU.Texas Football on the commit of Pachall: Brownwood QB Casey Pachall, a player most outlets have ranked in the state’s top 100 players and amongst the top five or six quarterbacks, has given out his verbal commitment to the Horned Frogs, making him one of the best and most highly touted recruits that TCU has landed in quite some time. To put things in perspective, Pachall also had an offer from Notre Dame and links to both Oklahoma, Arizona and other BCS programs. So how big could this be for TCU? Well, Pachall has the type of frame (6-4) that can develop into an NFL body if he can add 20-25 pounds of weight and an absolutely huge arm — there is no throw that he is physically incapable of making, and his windup/release is surprisingly quick for the amount of power he puts into it. He can also run, and has excellent speed and agility for a kid his size. In short, Pachall has all the tools and is going to be as good as he wants to be. To put it mildly, this is a huge addition for the Frogs. If Pachall stays true to his commitment, he’s in great shape to have a productive collegiate career. Assuming current Horned Frog quarterback Andy Dalton stars for three more years as many expect, then Pachall could start as just a sophomore if he redshirts his true freshman year. It’s a perfect situation — a redshirt year to grow, one year as a backup, then he takes the field for the next three. Very promising.
Offers:
QB Tyrik Rollison 6-2/185/4.65 Sulphur Springs, TX #16 recruit in the country per Rivals, completed almost 70% of his passes in 2007 for 3,691 yards, 37 TDs and only 10 ints. Also 554 yards rushing and 7 TDs.
Others:
- John David Baker 6-1/180/4.6 San Angelo, TX (Lake View) Texas Top 50
- Dylan DeLeon 5-10/160/4.72 Weslasco, TX 32″ vert.
- Mark Drake 6-2/180/4.83 Rockdale, TX
- Christian Mathews 6-3/180/4.6 Arlington, TX (Bowie)
- Andy McLoud 6-2/190 The Woodlands, TX
- Bryce Petty 6-3/215/4.7 Midlothian, TX
- Derek Thompson 6-4/200 Glen Rose, TX
TCU came within a whisker to having the top QB class for 2009 as Shavodrick Beaver came close to picking the Horned Frogs over Michi, but it didn’t happen. Rollison is an athletic player with a good arm, but grades and other issues seem to make him a long shot. Of the remaining QBs listed none seem to be getting a lot of attention from the coaches right now, but that could change. Probably some re-evaluation as to whether to go after a JUCO such as Terrance Cain from Blinn or the former Nolan QB Sean Hakes who is at San Antonio CC in Walnut, CA to add experienced depth before Pachal & Gallegos get a chance to see some playing time. Also there appears to be continued interest in Beaver and the coaches must feel they can be patient in deciding on the #2 QB in this class.

The safety position are very key to the 4-2-5 defense and the rotations demands that there are 9 solid players filling those positions at all times on the depth chart. During the spring it was obvious that Brian Bonner & David Roach will be missed as players and leaders, however it also became obvious that this will be SR Stephen Hodge’s team in the fall. The hard hitting defensive QB from Tatum has already been named to numerous preseason awards watch lists and expectations are high for him and all of the defense this coming season. Along with Hodge expect Corderra Hunter and Stephen Coleman to top the chart however they will be pushed hard by TeJay Johnson, Johnny Fobbs & Tekerrien Cuba. One of the keys to the success of the 2008 season will be how well this group performs, especially Hunter & Coleman.
The Current Depth Chart:
Strong Safety
Stephen Hodge SR-returning sack leader on the defensive with 8
Andy Burrell SR-Walk on from Paschal, plays smart and had a good spring
Colin Jones SO-future leader on the defense, good speed and likes to hit
Weak Safety
Corderra Hunter JR-Great size & speed, but has switched from CB to S which slowed progress.
TeJay Johnson SO-Played as a true freshman and looked great in the spring.
Tekerrien Cuba FR-RS freshman with high expectations. Tall and has great hands and quickness.
Free Safety
Steven Coleman SR-returning INT leader along with CB Rafael Priest. Erratic play on the field has kept the coaches from being completely comfortable with him at the position. Played strong in the spring after getting pushed hard by the youngsters.
Johnny Fobbs FR-RS freshman who showed a lot during the spring.
Chez Thomas FR-Another highly regarded RS freshman.
Others on the Roster
Sir DeMarco Bledsoe FR-Injured in Baylor game but expected back for summer and could jump into the depth chart quickly.
Chris Scott FR-true freshman, but expected to contribute early. A hard hitting back but needs some time to learn the defense.
Needs in the 2009 class
A good combination of youth and experience on the depth chart with 3 seniors and 5 freshmen and two more freshmen pushing for PT. Depending upon how comfortable the staff is with the youngsters will determine what they will look for in the incoming class. Expect at least on true freshman and possibly a JUCO to add experienced depth if they can find one who has played in a similar defense. Also this class will have several athletes in it that could easily switch to the safety positions if needed.
Offers:
CB/FS Steven Terrell 5-11/175/4.4 Allen, TX DMN player of the week after monster performance against Plano in 2007, 3.8 GPA.
S Kevin Brent 5-11/196/4.42 Dallas, TX (South Oak Cliff) Hard hitting safety ranked #58 overall recruit in the nation by Rivals.
Ath Rex Burkhead 5-11/195/4.5 Plano, TX (Mr Everything and another great all-around athlete) http://feedroom.gamedaytv.com/ihsf/?sid=100254&cid=10004&p=cowboys1&sessionIDPassed=uh3fhc45hp4f0cqnzyvjq455&bhcp=1&itemid=1001212331&catid=5743
Others:
Joseph Bonugli S 6-0/180/4.5 San Antonio, TX (Warren)
Terrence Bullitt S 6-2/180/4.68 Garland, TX (Naaman Forest)
Justin Lilley 5-11/205/4.48 Westlake, CA had 115 tackles in 2007 along with avg almost 10 yards a carry on offense. A two-time all-Marmonte League Pick, First Team All-Ventura County Back of the Year, Two Time all-CIF Northern Division pick.
Michael Williams S 6-1/190 Lewisville, TX (FM)
JUCO
Marc Kinney 6-2/205/4.5 Cisco CC (TX)
Jasper Simmons 6-1/210/4.47 Hutchinson CC (KS)
Len Armstrong 6-3/200/4.46 Gulf Coast CC (MS) Dec grad
Aaron Brown 6-1/210/4.55 Saddleback CC (CA) Dec grad
Brandon Brown 6-2/205/4.55 Highland CC (KS)
Devynn Brown 5-0/190 El Camino CC (CA)
Alphonso Bruton 6-2/210 El Camino CC (CA)
Rex Burkhead probably the coaches’ favorite right now and would compete at multiple positions, but safety is most likely his calling. Steven Terrell is another hot prospect and would be a great pick up for the staff. Brent is more of a long shot as is Naaman Forest’s Terrence Bullit, but Joseph Bonugli from San Antonio Warren may be lesser known, but is a true playmaker on the field. Justin Lilley is a kid you will probably start to hear more about in the near future. The JUCOs are harder to read, but listed are some of the better prospects from areas the coaches usually look. Texas Tech scooped up Ryan Clark out of Navarro who was definitely on the coaches list.

Over the next few weeks I will try and cover each position for the Frogs in terms of how things went in the spring, what to look forward to this coming season, current depth, needs and prospects for 2009.
I will start with the running backs today:
Going into the 2007 season the running back depth had taken a big hit with the loss of Detrick James and the staff scrammbled to find a replacement and felt they had found a secret weapon in Ryan Christian. The depth continued to take a major pounding throughout the season due to injuries and transfer of Joseph Banyard, and no Frog runner finished the season with more than 600 yards rushing. Though Christian finished 3rd on the team in rushing during the season with 321 yards, he was more valuable in the slot position and will see the bulk of his action from that spot in 2008 provided injuries do not force any changes.
For 2008 even with the changes in the offense, the running backs will still be a major focus in the game plan. In addition, though the backfield still has some injury questions, especially Joseph Turner, the emergence of both Chris Smith & Jai Caveness during the fall and spring drills should fortify the position. Look for the backs to be used in a wider variety of roles, but the big power runners will get their fair share of the load. Turner & Smith will be key to the success of the frogs this coming season.
Current roster:
Tailbacks:
Aaron Brown SR 6-1/196/4.45 Injuries really hampered the preseason MWC pick to be offensive player of the year. Finished second in rushing for the frogs with 490 yards, avg 4.6 yards per carry and had 995 all-purpose yards for the season. Over 2,000 yards rushing in his 3 seasons. Looked to be fully recovered during spring drills but coaches limited his action on the field. Will be the focus back in 2008 and will be used in a variety of formations to get him the ball with space in the new offense.
Joseph Turner JR 6-1/226/4.5 Leading rusher for the frogs in 2007 with 597 yards and avg 5.2 yards per carry and six TDs. Had season high 233 yards against San Diego state and was voted teams most valuable offensive player for the year despite missing 3 contests with injuries. Texas Bowl injury caused him to miss spring drills, but is expected to be ready for the fall.
Jai Caveness RSFR 5-8/175/4.4 Speedster who likes to get to the corner, but showed he can handle the ball up the middle during the fall and in the spring. A playmaker on the field and should get plenty of action in 2008 as the #3 back.
Justin Watts SR 5-10/195/4.65 Steady performer for the frogs over the years and finished with 207 yards for the 2007 season. Has provided key depth the last few years in the injury plagued backfield.
Fullbacks:
Chris Smith JR 5-11/231/4.6 Good speed and size and will be used in multiple positions in 2008.
Luke Shivers RSFR 6-0/205/4.6 Started out as a LBer for the frogs and moved to the FB position.
Ryan Hightower Soph 5-9/215 Walk-on from Albuquerque adds depth at the position.
Also, Jercell Fort & Ryan Christian will continue to get experience at the running back positions to add depth, but look for each to end up elsewhere on the team unless injuries force major changes.

RB Edward Wesley 5-9/187/4.4 Irving, TX (MacArthur) 1st team all-district, HM all-state, 201 carries in 2007 for 1,309 yards and 15 TDs.

Needs for 2009 class:
Frogs will lose Aaron Brown & Justin Watts to graduation and have only two backs on the roster from the previous two recruiting classes: Caveness & Wesley. Future depth at the position needs to be addressed along with experience. Look for at least 2 incoming freshmen in addition to Thompson the commit and either a transfer this summer or 1 JUCO back to provide more experience.
Commits:
RB/DB Jurell Thompson 6-0/195/4.5 Witchita Falls, TX (Rider) All State, DMN State Top 50 for 2009 and Rivals 4 star athlete, 55 tackles as a safety and 907 rushing and 18 all-purpose TDs in 2007. Offers include Arkansas, Arizona St, Ole Miss, Utah, Georgia Tech and SMU. TexasFootball.com on the Thompson commit to TCU: They may not have started with the flair that the Longhorns did, and they may not finish with the same authority that A&M likely will, but TCU’s recruiting so far has been brilliant. The Horned Frogs have added Wichita Falls Rider ATH Jurell Thompson, who has been as instrumental to Rider’s recent successes as names like Shavodrick Beaver and Eric Ward. In 2007 alone, the gifted Thompson compiled almost 1,000 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns, 200 receiving yards and two touchdowns and two punt returns for touchdowns. Oh yeah, and he’ll also play defensive back in 2008.Thompson is actually quite similar to Dayton’s AJ Dugat, another TCU 2009 commit who has built a reputation as a rusher and pass-catcher. At this point, it looks like head coach Gary Patterson is making it a priority to compile large groups of athletic utility types to use around offensive centerpiece Andy Dalton. Whether or not this commitment opens the door for Rider QB Beaver, who has also expressed interest in TCU, remains to be seen.
