The first ‘major’ of the New Year, the US Masters is the one to watch. With bookmakers already well on their way to setting the odds for potential players and winners, and golf tipsters working their magic to give us a starting point for which players to keep our eyes on, April can’t come soon enough. However, for those who may be new to the wonder that is the US Masters, or those who just want the run-down of what 2018’s tournament has to offer, we’ve pulled together a quick guide to help you out.

Each year, the US Masters piques the interest of golf fans and players alike all across the world. Taking place in the spring, the tournament is one of the biggest in men’s professional golf, and has been going on since as early as 1934. This year’s tournament will be the 82nd, but it’s bound to provide just as much excitement and anticipation as any before. So, what do you need to know about this year’s tournament?

The 2018 US Masters takes place on April 5th-8th this year at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia. The Augusta Golf Club is the home of the US Masters, and has played host to this tournament since its first year back in 1934, only three years after construction began on the site. It had been ready for play since 1932, but it wasn’t until the Masters Tournament that it truly took its place as a well-established course. Who’s Competing This Year?

The run up to the tournament every year is a tense one, with the question of who is going to be invited playing on everyone’s minds. Will J.J. Henry qualify for an invitation? Or will Tom Hoge return for the first time since 2007? Luckily, the list of invitees is already available on the Masters website!

Masters Champions such as Tiger Woods, Bubba Watson, Ian Woosnam, Vijay Singh, Mark O’Meara, Sandy Lyle and many more are invited to play this year, as well as players in their first Masters tournaments including the likes of Yusaku Miyazato, Joaquin Niemann, Matt Parziale, Doug Ghim and plenty more. How Do You Qualify?

For players to qualify for an invitation to play there are 19 criteria that they need to meet one or more of. They are listed on the Masters site as follows:

  1. Masters Tournament Champions (Lifetime)
  2. US Open Champions (Honorary, non-competing after five years)
  3. British Open Champions (Honorary, non-competing after five years)
  4. PGA Champions (Honorary, non-competing after five years)
  5. Winners of The Players Championship (Three years)
  6. Current Olympic Gold Medalist (One year)
  7. Current US Amateur Champion (7-A) (Honorary, non-competing after one year) and the runner-up (7-B) to the current US Amateur Champion
  8. Current British Amateur Champion (Honorary, non-competing after one year)
  9. Current Asia-Pacific Amateur Champion
  10. Current Latin America Amateur Champion
  11. Current US Mid-Amateur Champion
  12. The first 12 players, including ties, in the previous year’s Masters Tournament
  13. The first four players, including ties, in the previous year’s US Open Championship
  14. The first four players, including ties, in the previous year’s British Open Championship
  15. The first four players, including ties, in the previous year’s PGA Championship
  16. Individual winners of PGA Tour events that award a full-point allocation for the season-ending Tour Championship, from previous Masters to current Masters
  17. Those qualifying for the previous year’s season-ending Tour Championship
  18. The 50 leaders on the Final Official World Golf Ranking for the previous calendar year
  19. The 50 leaders on the Official World Golf Ranking published during the week prior to the current Masters Tournament
