Big 12 Roundup: Baylor struggles early with SMU; Texas Tech loss in record fashion

Mayfield leads No. 14 Oklahoma past ULM 59-17

NORMAN, Okla. — Oklahoma can finally talk about Ohio State.

Baker Mayfield passed for 244 yards and three touchdowns in a half of work, and the 14th-ranked Sooners beat Louisiana-Monroe 59-17 on Saturday night in a warmup for their showdown with the Buckeyes.

Oklahoma lost its opener to Houston and fell from No. 3 to No. 14 in the AP poll , but its home matchup with fourth-ranked Ohio State next week offers a chance to return to its place among the nation’s top teams.

“They’re obviously a good program,” Mayfield said. “Everybody knows that. I feel confident in what we’re doing right now, and I think we’re going to keep progressing. I think it’ll be a good matchup.”

Russell, No. 23 Baylor struggle early in 40-13 win over SMU

WACO, Texas (AP) – Seth Russell threw for 261 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score, and No. 23 Baylor recovered from a slow start to rout SMU 40-13 on Saturday.

Russell and the Bears (2-0) struggled offensively in the first half and had to settle for a 6-6 tie at intermission, but broke through with a 20-point third quarter on their way to a 13th straight victory over their former Southwest Conference rival.

Baylor missed on several deep shots in the first half, but Blake Lynch capped its opening march after halftime by breaking free in the right seam for a 31-yard touchdown reception from Russell, who added a 19-yard scoring burst on a scramble on the Bears’ next possession. Russell was 26 of 47 with two interceptions.

Oklahoma State stunned by Central Michigan

The officiating mistake was a doozy — and it cannot be fixed. The play that followed was even more astonishing.

One of the oddest endings imaginable left Oklahoma State stunned and Central Michigan celebrating.

A misinterpreted rule extended the game when it should have been over and allowed the Chippewas to score a wild, winning touchdown on a Hail Mary and lateral — yes, both! — that covered half the field for an 30-27 upset of No. 22 Oklahoma State on Saturday.

Oklahoma State (1-1) tried to kill the final 4 seconds of the game by throwing the ball away on fourth down, but the Cowboys were penalized for intentional grounding, which is a loss of down penalty. Rules state that the game cannot end on an accepted live-ball penalty, referee Tim O’Dey of the Mid-American Conference, CMU’s league, said.

Buechele shines again, No. 11 Texas beats UTEP 41-7

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – Freshman quarterback Shane Buechele passed for 244 yards and four touchdowns and No. 11 Texas backed up its first national ranking since 2013 with a 41-7 victory over UTEP on Saturday night.

Buechele also showed some skills running the zone read option, giving the Longhorns (2-0) another wrinkle in their new offense.

Buechele threw touchdown passes of 29 and 7 yards to Jerrod Heard, who started at quarterback most of 2015 but moved to wide receiver this season. He also connected with Dorian Leonard for a 46-yard score in the third quarter that made it 34-7.

ASU outlasts Texas Tech 68-55 behind Ballage’s record-breaking 8 touchdowns

TEMPE, AZ (KPHO/KTVK) – At a certain point, words were insufficient, but that didn’t mean that nothing was said.

“Our guys had something to say tonight.”

Arizona State head coach Todd Graham was thrilled by the statements that his players made in his team’s 68-55 win over Texas Tech on Saturday night. But in a game that went from exciting, to historic, to downright absurd, one point was made so emphatically, it reverberated throughout college football history and the record books.

ASU junior running back Kalen Ballage scored eight touchdowns in the contest, breaking the school and Pac-12 records for touchdowns scored in a single game and tying the all-time record in FBS history.

“I want to win football games, and that’s what this is about to me,” Ballage said. “That is what happened tonight. Scoring eight touchdowns wasn’t a part of the plan at all.”

Mountaineers overcome early scare, beat Youngstown 38-21

MORGANTOWN — Pretty? Nope.

A few anxious moments? You bet.

Satisfying? Certainly.

West Virginia (2-0) got a bit of a scare Saturday from Youngstown State – trailing the FCS opponent 14-7 in the second quarter and going to halftime tied – but the Mountaineers exploded out of the break. Seventeen third-quarter points erased any thoughts of an upset on the way to a 38-21 WVU victory on a scorching hot day at Mountaineer Field.

“There wasn’t anything that happened today that’s surprising to me,” said WVU head coach Dana Holgorsen. “Youngstown State is a good football team.

Hawkeyes roll over Iowa State

IOWA CITY — It’s been a close game in recent years in the Iowa-Iowa State rivalry.

This one wasn’t. A big first-half outburst by the Hawkeyes made sure of that.

Iowa rolled to a 42-3 win over the Cyclones on Saturday night at Kinnick Stadium, a game that never felt in doubt as the more-experienced Hawkeyes made every play they needed and the rebuilding Cyclones found so many different ways to stumble.

The margin of victory was the largest in the series since Iowa’s 63-20 win in 1997.

“We played good team football,” Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said. “Good, complementary, team football.”

Ohio builds big early lead, knocks off Kansas 37-21

LAWRENCE – Ohio’s Greg Windham played like a fifth-year senior rather than a quarterback making just his second career start, though Kansas certainly did everything it could to help him out.

Two fumbled punt returns. Inopportune penalties. An interception. A safety.

The result was a 37-21 victory for the Bobcats on Saturday that went a long way toward erasing the memory of a triple-overtime defeat to Texas State in their season opener.

“I’m proud of our guys the way they came back,” Ohio coach Frank Solich said. “I thought it showed our resolve. They practiced well this past week. I think the signs were there that they were going to have an opportunity to play well, and to play to our potential hopefully.”
