GoFrogs: Notes on a Scorecard

WELCOME OLD FRIEND
A longtime familiar foe returns to Amon G. Carter Stadium Saturday as former Southwest Conference rival Arkansas comes to town. The 6 p.m. game is sold out. A limited number of SRO tickets are available. Please CLICK HERE to make your purchase or contact our Ticket Office at (817) 257-FROG (3764).

IN-GAME ENTERTAINMENT
Make sure you’re in your seats early for Saturday’s 6 p.m. football game versus Arkansas. Two F-16 Fighting Falcons from the 149th Fighter Wing, based out of Joint Base Lackland in San Antonio, will provide a flyover at the close of our national anthem. Between the first and second quarters, we’ll be recognizing our Big 12 and NCAA champions from last year.

WELCOME ESPN
A crew from ESPN’s College GameDay was on campus Thursday for interviews with head coach Gary Patterson and some of our football student-athletes to preview the Arkansas game for Saturday’s show. We also have the great crew of Joe Tessitore, Todd Blackledge and Holly Rowe providing the call on Saturday’s game.

HORNED FROGS FACTOR
Words can’t describe how proud we are to see Mindy Miles be recognized by the NCAA with the Division I Student-Athlete Sportsmanship Award!

In rifle, you self-report misfires. The sport operates on the honor system. As you might recall, we finished second at the NCAA Championships. We were just four points behind West Virginia for the top spot. While Mindy’s reporting of her misfire might have cost us the national title, she showed why TCU student-athletes are defined by their integrity. Way to go Mindy!

HORNED FROGS NOSTALGIA
We’re excited to announce a new vintage Horned Frogs merchandise line that will be released Friday on Shop.GoFrogs.com as well as the TCU Bookstore and local retailers. Keep an eye on our social media platforms for more information!

HALL OF FAME WEEKEND
It’s nice to have some of our past greats returning to campus this weekend as the newest members of our TCU Lettermen’s Association Hall of Fame. Being inducted Thursday night and recognized at Saturday’s football game will be David Bobo `00 (Football), Estaban Carril ’01 (Men’s Tennis), Chad Huffman `06 (Baseball/Football), Donovan Powell `95 (Men’s Track & Field) and Mike Ramsey ’85 (Baseball). Linzy Cole `70 (Football) is our Vintage Honoree. Congrats gentlemen!

GO PURPLE FRIDAY
Every Friday of football season is once again Go Purple Friday! Make sure to wear your purple TCU gear for discounts. It’s been a record year in 2016, our seventh season of the program, with 214 partners. You can enjoy discounts from retailers, restaurants and various professional service providers.

FEEDING THE HORNED FROGS
One of our focal points is to always enhance the student-athlete experience. When our student-athletes returned to campus this semester, we were excited to debut our new TCU Frog Fuel Performance Dining Facility in the Moncrief Club. Thanks to the great work of Executive Chef and TCU graduate Colin Kirkpatrick, we have specially-prepared dinners for our student-athletes each Sunday through Thursday.

HORNED FROG CLASSIC NEARING
The 38th-annual Horned Frog Classic presented by Greenwood Office Outfitters is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 17, at Colonial Country Club. Join us for a full day of golf, great food and prizes at the historic Colonial. The entire day supports scholarships for TCU student-athletes. Contact John Denton (j.denton@tcu.edu) or our Frog Club Office (817-257-7700) to register. Don’t delay! This event is an annual sellout.

BACKPACK DONATIONS

I couldn’t have been more proud of our student-athletes recently when they, in conjunction with the Gary Patterson Foundation and Albertsons, donated backpacks to students at Como Elementary School in Fort Worth.

The TCU Athletics Back to School Project saw student-athletes donate their new and lightly-used backpacks for the purpose of encouraging and engaging kids in the local community. The student-athletes had a strong desire to work with Como Elementary, given its proximity and need.

Freshman student-athletes in the Horned Frog Academy wrote personalized letters to the students at Como Elementary. The Gary Patterson Foundation and Albertsons then donated school supplies for over 500 students.

TCU’s Academic-Athletics Services Office prepped over 500 TCU string bags full of school supplies. On Aug. 22, the first day of school, football student-athletes Josh Carraway, John Diarse, Deanté Gray and Kenny Iloka surprised the students by handing out backpacks and supplies during class.

UNDEFEATED!
Congratulations to head coach Eric Bell, his staff and the student-athletes in our soccer program on the great 5-0 start to the season. Make sure to head out to Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium Friday at 7 p.m. as we host Washington State. Wear your TCU soccer scarf and get $1 drinks.

We also have a Sunday 1 p.m. match versus Oral Roberts. It’s $1 Day. Tickets, drinks and popcorn will all be $1. There’s also a post-game clinic. Just call (817) 257-TICK to sign up.

OMAHA BOUND

It’s not our baseball team this time, but rather volleyball who’s headed to Omaha! Director of Volleyball Jill Kramer’s squad is 4-1 and will face Creighton Friday at 6 p.m. and Chattanooga Saturday at noon. We’ll return home next weekend to host the Horned Frogs Challenge.

NAME THE MOVIE QUOTE

Last Edition’s Answer: Famed restaurateur Cleo McDowell in Coming to America said, “They got the Golden Arches, mine is the Golden Arcs.”

This Week’s Question: “You know this gritty kid from the streets of Harlem really creates excitement. $4 million dollars a year, that’s true, but he earns every nickel of it.”

COMPLIANCE CORNER

Ocean State University (OSU) is now offering a new degree program in hotel and event management. To help generate awareness and interest in this new program, OSU will be hosting events throughout the fall semester for guidance counselors and academic advisors throughout the country. The first event for the fall will take place this weekend in conjunction with OSU’s home football game. Is it permissible for the admissions office to provide guidance counselors and academic advisors with complimentary admissions to the game, a pin and refreshments during the game?

Yes. NCAA Bylaw 13.8.1.1 states that an institutional department outside the athletics department (e.g., president’s office, admissions) may host nonathletics high school, preparatory school or two-year college personnel (e.g., guidance counselors, principals) in conjunction with a home intercollegiate athletics event and may provide such individuals reasonable expenses (e.g., food, refreshments, parking, room) and a nominal gift, provided the visit is not related to athletics recruiting and there is no involvement by the institution’s athletics recruiting and there is no involvement by the institution’s athletics department in the arrangements for the visit, other than providing (in accordance with established policy) free admissions to an athletics event. [R] (Adopted: 3/8/12)
