GoFrogs: TCU Tops Navy 1-0 In Double Overtime

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – A foul deep in TCU’s attacking zone set up Lauren Sajewich’s eventual game-winning goal as the Horned Frogs defeated Navy 1-0 in double overtime Sunday. TCU is off to a 2-0 start with a pair of overtime victories this season.

The Rundown

A strong run from Tara Smith generated a foul call deep in the attacking zone in the second overtime. TCU used the call and turned it into the game-winning goal. Emma Heckendorntook the quick, which was almost the equivalent of a corner kick. Her feed was right on target and Sajewich headed home the game winner in the 104th minute. The goal was the only real scoring threat for either side in the overtime sessions.

While Courtney Hofer registered the only two saves in the first half, it was TCU that had the better of the opportunities to take the lead. Twice the Horned Frogs had strong looks at a wide open net only to see the ball trickle just wide.

No chance was better than Allison Ganter’s in the 39th minute. The Navy defender misplayed a header while the goalkeeper was charging to corral the ball. Ganter had a wide-open net to shoot at, but the shot curved just past the post and out of danger.

The second half was full of chances for both sides, but the only goal of the half was negated by an offside call. Once again, Katie Lund came up huge in the half, making a trio of saves, including two in the final two minutes of regulation to keep it scoreless.

In the 55th minute, Navy was called for a foul deep in TCU’s attacking zone. Sajewich’s initial shot was saved by the Navy goalkeeper, but TCU got to the rebound. Before Heckendorn’s shot crossed the goal line, TCU was called offside to negate the goal.

Lund made two great saves to keep the game scoreless. The first came in the 68th minute as she stuck with a double deflection to stop the low shot. Her best save of the half came with just under two minutes to go as she hauled in a header from in tight.

Stat of the Game

TCU has played six straight overtime games dating back to the 2015 season.

Quotes of the Game
Head Coach Eric Bell

On playing multiple overtime contests:
“Six overtime games in a row for us and we are now finding a way to win these games instead of tying or losing them like in the past. From a mentality standpoint, I’m very proud of our group and how we are grinding out the wins.”

On the adjustments at the half:
“We came out lethargic and not enough energy. We challenged them at the half to have a little bit more energy and enthusiasm collectively so that we had a chance to get a good result.”

On the game-winning goal:
“First of all, I thought Tara Smith did a good job of getting the foul called. Then, Emma Heckendorn serves in a great ball to the far post for Lauren (Sajewich) to knock it home.”

On the opening trip:
“Very happy overall with the trip from beginning to end. These guys have done a tremendous job from Aug. 3 to now and hopefully we can keep it going into next week.”
