AP: TCU reliever Burnett making most of opportunity after injuries

OMAHA, Neb. — TCU reliever Ryan Burnett is trying to make up for lost time at the College World Series.

Arm injuries kept him home for the Horned Frogs’ appearances the past two seasons. So far this year he has a win and a save in the first two games, with his 3 1/3 innings of no-hit shutout relief a big key in TCU’s 6-1 victory over Coastal Carolina on Tuesday night.

“I’ve been waiting two years on this,” Burnett, a 2013 graduate of The Woodlands High School. “It’s definitely a blessing. I’m honored. I worked my butt off this fall, this spring, just to get here once again because I haven’t been able to travel the last two. I love it right now. It’s a great time.”

Adding some intrigue to Burnett’s comeback is the fact he’s been pitching all season on a torn ACL in his left knee. He’s 3-1 with a 2.05 in 30 2/3 innings and is the Frogs’ top left-hander out of the bullpen. Burnett, who has 30 strikeouts against six walks, plans to have surgery to repair the knee ligament after the season.
