FORT WORTH, Texas – The historic TCU men’s tennis season came to an end as sophomore and All-American Cameron Norrie fell in the semifinals of the NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Singles Championship to No. 1 Mikael Torpegaard of Ohio State, 6-3, 6-4, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla., on Sunday.

Norrie, TCU’s first singles player to reach the Final Four, went toe-to-toe with Torpegaard throughout the match, but late breaks in each set proved to be the deciding factor as the No. 1 player in the Oracle/ITA rankings defeated the Auckland, New Zealand native in straight sets.

Through the first seven games in the first set, each player held serve with Torpegaard holding the slight 4-3 lead. With Norrie serving, play was suspended due to lightning in the area and the rest of the match was moved to the indoor facility. Torpegaard was able to break Norrie when the match resumed and then held serve to take the opening set, 6-3.

Torpegaard opened the second set by breaking Norrie and then holding for a 2-0 lead before Norrie got on the board. The Buckeye would then go up 3-1 before Norrie battled back to break Torpegaard and hold twice for three straight game wins to take a 4-3 lead. Torpegaard evened out the match at 4-4, before breaking Norrie late once again to take the second set, 6-4, and win the match in straight sets.

Quotes of the Match
Head Coach David Roditi
“What a great tournament and a great season for Cameron (Norrie). Only one player gets to leave the tournament feeling amazing, but Cameron did make history for TCU men’s tennis here and he should be very proud of his accomplishments. (Mikael) Torpegaard executed his game slightly better in some key moments today, which allowed him to win this match. We are proud of Cameron’s development this season. He helped our team finish a spot higher in the rankings from last year and he made it a round further than last year as well. Being an All-American in back-to-back seasons as a sophomore is an incredible accomplishment and Cameron will continue to add to that after a productive summer. Now it’s time for TCU men’s tennis to evaluate our program and make it better for next season.”
