GoFrogs: Men’s golf misses cut

EUGENE, Oregon — The TCU men’s golf team was the biggest mover at Sunday’s NCAA Championships third round, but missed the 15-team cut after tying for 14th place and losing a tiebreaker by one shot.

The Frogs shot a 6-over 286 at the Eugene Country Club on Sunday, moving up nine spots into a five-way tie for 14th place, but only two of the teams could advance to Monday’s fourth round.

The non sudden death tiebreaker was determined by the cumulative total of non-counting scores from each day. Louisville won the tiebreaker with a 230 non-counter score. Oklahoma then earned the final spot in Monday’s round with a 234 non-counter score, just one shot better than TCU’s 235 score.

“I’m incredibly proud of this team,” head coach Bill Montigel said. “They hung in there and played very tough. It came down to very end, but I couldn’t be more proud of this team.”

“We started out the year with five freshmen. We lost two All-Americans from last year (Julien Brun and Andrew Presley). So what this team has done is nothing short of incredible. They should be incredibly proud of the run they have made.”

In addition to the top 15 teams surviving the cut into Monday’s fourth round, the top nine individuals not on those teams also advance for a chance to play for an individual championship.

TCU’s Paul Barjon and Chelso Barrett both made that cut as Barjon shot a 1-under 69 on Sunday and Barrett posted a 2-over 72. Barjon is now 2-under par for the tournament and in a tie for fourth place, four shots off the individual lead.

Barrett is 3-over par for the tournament and tied for 20th place. He earned his spot via a tiebreaker as his third round score was lower than three others who tied for 20th and weren’t on an advancing team.

Ryan Books and Pierre Mazier also played well for TCU on Sunday as they fired a 2-over 72 and 3-over 73, respectively. Mazier finished the tournament at 12-over par, while Books finished at 14-over par. Giulio Castagnara closed out TCU’s scoring with a 79 and finished 25-over for the tournament.

Barrett and Barjon will tee off at 1:40 p.m. CT and 3:40 p.m. CT, respectively, on Monday. The Golf Channel will have live coverage of Monday’s round, beginning at 6 p.m. CT. By the time coverage wraps up at 9 p.m. CT, an individual champion will be crowned and eight teams will move on to match play.
