GoFrogs: M. Golf Advances to NCAA Championships
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — For the sixth time in the last eight years and 19th time in school history, the TCU men’s golf team has advanced to the NCAA Championships.
The Horned Frogs, who entered Wednesday’s final round of the NCAA Albuquerque Regional in second, maintained that position after carding the day’s best round at 3-over par. TCU finished at +12, 12 shots back of winner Arizona State. USC was third at +31.
“It was a total team effort,” said TCU golf coach Bill Montigel. “They have worked so hard the entire year.”
The top five teams of each of the six NCAA Regionals along with the top individual who is not a member of one of those teams advance to Eugene, Oregon, May 27-June 1.
Individually, TCU’s Paul Barjon (73-76-70) and Ryan Books tied for third, while Giulio Castagnara (76-80-71) tied for 22nd.
Barjon, who birdied three of the first four holes, finished 3-under on the front nine and 1-over on the back to finish 2-under for the day — equaling the low round of the day — and 5-over par for the tournament.
Books, who entered the day tied for second, went out in +4 before recording two birdies and a bogey on the back nine to finish 3-over for the day and 5-over for the tournament.
Castagnara turned in his best round of the tournament with a 1-under par 71 on the final day. He had four birdies, including back-to-back birdies, to end the day on a high note.
Also for the Horned Frogs, Pierre Mazier (78-75-76) tied for 30th, while Chelso Barrett (73-84-75) tied for 40th.
