GoFrogs: Notes on a Scorecard

GRADUATION TIME
We hope all TCU students have had a successful final exams week! As I’m sure you know by now, one of my favorite days of the year is Saturday with TCU Commencement. We have 49 student-athletes donning the cap and gown this semester!

BIG 12 MEETINGS

As you’ve seen with its extensive media coverage, Big 12 Spring Meetings took place this week in Phoenix. My counterparts and I had very productive discussions on all topics related to continuing the tremendous momentum in the Conference.

BIG 12 CHAMPIONS, AGAIN!
Congratulations to our men’s tennis program! After capturing the regular-season crown, head coach David Roditi’s squad added to its hardware by also winning the Big 12 Tournament Championship with a 4-2 victory over No. 8 Texas Tech! Please mark your calendar for next Friday and Saturday, May 13-14, when we host the Fort Worth Regional at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

NOT ONE, NOT TWO, BUT 27

The streak continues! Our men’s golf program, under the leadership of head coach Bill Montigel, has now made it 27 consecutive years in the postseason! We begin play May 16 at the Albuquerque Regional.

ANOTHER SUCCESSUFL COODY & COACHES CLASSIC!

A record 224 players took part in last Friday’s Coody & Coaches Classic presented by Sodexo at Texas Star Golf Course. This annual tournament, now in its 19th year, supports scholarships for TCU student-athletes through the TCU Frog Club. Congratulations to the winning team of Brian Zumwalt, Bryan Moore, Pops Fitzgerald and Charles Hasley! They will represent TCU at the Acura National College Alumni Championship at Pinehurst Resort next October. Our thanks to all the TCU Coaches who participated and to our sponsors, including title sponsor Sodexo!

FROGS IN THE PROS
We’re very proud of our 10 players en route to the NFL from this past season’s football team. We had five draft picks and five free-agent signings. Josh Doctson to the Washington Redskins gave us a first-round pick for the second time in three seasons. It’s another great statement to the job head coach Gary Patterson, his staff, our strength and conditioning program and sports medicine department are doing in preparing our student-athletes for the next level.

ROAD WORK

I’ve had a lot of people wonder if we have a motocross coming to town with the pile of dirt on the corner of Bellaire and Bellaire, where we used to have grass parking for our home baseball games. That area is being converted to intramural fields for our student body.

JEOPARDY
TCU will be featured as part of a clue in the May 11 episode of Jeopardy! The clue will be in the category titled, “Division I Sports Teams” during the second week of Jeopardy’s Teachers Tournament. Check your local listings. In the Dallas-Fort Worth TV market, Jeopardy can be seen on TXA 21 at 6 p.m.

REPPIN’ THE FROGS IN CUBA
Brian Estridge, Voice of the Horned Frogs, was in Cuba recently with his wife Becky and a group that included Bill and Sandy Barnes, Glenn and Diane Whittington, Tom and Dixie Martin, Paul Haburn and Grady Hentz. Check out the purple convertible!

ON THE DOCKET

Due to final exams, it’s a little schedule this weekend for competition. However, our women’s golf team began play Thursday in Bryan, Texas, at its NCAA Regional. If you’re in the area, please drop by the Traditions Golf Club to catch them in action through Saturday.

Baseball has an open weekend in conference play and is at Penn State for a three-game series. We’ll be home Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. versus Stephen F. Austin. Please mark your calendar for next weekend when we host the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Lowdon Track and Field Complex.

NAME THE MOVIE QUOTE
Last Week’s Answer: Sean Penn, in arguably his greatest role as Jeff Spicoli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, asked legendary sportscaster Stu Nahan, “Where’d you get that jacket?”

This Week’s Question: “What is this – a trench coat convention?”

COMPLIANCE CORNER
The basketball coaches at Ocean State University are finalizing their conditioning and skill instruction schedules for the remainder of the spring semester. If none of the student-athletes have final exams on Wednesday of exam week, is it permissible to conduct skill instruction sessions on that day?

No. NCAA Bylaw 17.1.7.2 states that in (a) Sports Other Than Football, outside of the playing season, from the institution’s first day of classes of the academic year or Sept. 15, whichever occurs earlier, to one week prior to the beginning of the institution’s final examination period at the conclusion of the academic year, only a student-athlete’s participation in required weight training, conditioning and skill-related instruction shall be permitted.

A student-athlete’s participation in such activities per Bylaw 17.02.1 shall be limited to a maximum of eight hours per week with not more than two hours per week spent on skill-related workouts. All countable related activities outside the playing season are prohibited one week prior to the beginning of the final examination period for the applicable academic term through the conclusion of each student-athlete’s final exams. (Revised: 4/27/06 effective 8/1/06, 9/22/06)
