GoFrogs: M. Tennis Drops 4-2 Decision to TTU

FORT WORTH, Texas – The No. 4 TCU men’s tennis team had its 17-match winning streak snapped on Sunday afternoon, as the team dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 9 Texas Tech in the regular season finale at the McLeod Tennis Center in Lubbock, Texas.

With the loss, the Horned Frogs (22-3, 4-1 Big 12) will share the 2016 Big 12 Conference regular season title with the Red Raiders (26-4, 4-1 Big 12) and will be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Big 12 Conference Championship.

TCU dropped the doubles point for the first time in the last eight matches as a tiebreaker on court two decided the point. The No. 73 ranked pair of Hudson Blake and Reese Stalder picked up their sixth straight win and fourth over a ranked foe as they topped No. 85 Alex Sendegeya and Bjorn Thomson, 6-4, on court one. Alex Rybakov and Cameron Norrie had their nine-match winning streak snapped as they dropped a 7-5 decision on court three. Guillermo Nuñez and Trevor Johnson fought point-for-point, but Texas Tech ultimately took the tiebreaker, 7-3, and the doubles point with the win at the No. 2 position.

In singles, No. 24 Rybakov evened up the match with a 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 110 Hugo Dojas, but Texas Tech regained the lead with a win at the top position. The Red Raiders would go up 3-1 in the match with a win at the No. 4 position, before Johnson came back to win his match on court six, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, to put the match score at 3-2. Jerry Lopez was leading 5-2 in the final set on court five, but Texas Tech pulled off a comeback on court three to win take the overall match victory.

Quotes of the Match
Head Coach David Roditi
“Texas Tech did a great job competing in some key spots. They outplayed us in doubles and we were too hesitant and they were aggressive. I am happy for their coaching staff including former head coach Tim Siegel, which together with James Wilson put a very good squad out there and current head coach Brett Masi had them ready to play.

“We have been getting away with some things that cost teams titles and big accomplishments and I’m glad that happened now instead of next week so we can learn from the mistakes. We have a young team that has been asked to grow up fast. I am very proud of our play at No. 1 doubles and the comeback from Trevor Johnson and Jerry Lopez. It hurts to lose the deciding match after being up and in total control and Guillermo Nuñez has won some huge matches for us and I know he will be even stronger next time. Alex Rybakov played at too high of a level today and I am proud of his win. Now it is time for us to go home and get ready for the conference tournament where we will have to battle a very tough team in the semifinals. Congratulations to Texas Tech for their share of the Big 12 title.”
