GoFrogs: Pena Holds Lead at Big 12 Women’s Golf Championship

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — TCU freshman Sabina Pena carded a 5-under-par 67 to take the individual lead after Saturday’s second round of the Big 12 Women’s Golf Championship.

TCU’s 1-over 289 tied for the second-best score on the day. The 27th-ranked Horned Frogs are in fourth place at 583, just nine shots behind No. 9 and leader Oklahoma State’s 574.

Pena recorded the second 67 by a Horned Frog this season, joining Kelly McGovern at September’s Golfweek Conference Challenge. Pena had just the fourth 67 or lower at the Big 12 Championship and was only one shot off Madison Pressel’s (Texas) 66 in 2011 for the lowest round in tournament history.

Pena’s day was highlighted by an eagle on the par 5, 488-yard 11th hole. She added four birdies while posting par on 12 holes.

One of four freshmen in the TCU lineup, Pena is at 4-under 140. She will enter Sunday’s final round with a one-shot lead over Oklahoma State’s Kenzie Neisen and Iowa State’s Chayanit Wangmahaporn.

“I am really pleased with this team’s progress and process,” TCU head women’s golf coach Angie Ravaioli-Larkin said. “We were steady and confident all day.

“Sabina played a solid round and was calm all day. She has a very laid back demeanor, kept smiling all day and stayed present. I am so proud and happy for her and this entire team. They are ready!”

McGovern posted a 73 and is tied for 17th at 147. She had two birdies while recording par on 13 holes.

Annika Clark and Brooke McDougald added a 74 and 75, respectively, for the Horned Frogs. Clark shot par on 16 of 18 holes. McDougald had a pair of birdies.

Brooke Graebe, who is tied for 20th at 148, birdied two of her opening three holes en route to a 76.

TCU’s final-round tee times Sunday begin at 8 a.m. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
