GoFrogs: M. Tennis Pulls Off 4-2 Win Over Texas

Final Stats

FORT WORTH, Texas – Down 5-2 in the final set, freshman Alex Rybakov came back and won five straight games to clinch the No. 2 TCU men’s tennis team’s 4-2 victory over No. 18 Texas on Saturday afternoon inside the Weller Indoor Tennis Facility in Austin, Texas.

After taking the doubles point with the top pair of Reese Stalder and Hudson Blake dominating a tiebreaker 7-1, the Horned Frogs (21-2, 3-0 Big 12) struggled to start singles action as they dropped the first set on five of the six courts to the Longhorns (17-9, 1-3 Big 12). No. 5 Cameron Norrie was consistent at the top of the lineup as the sophomore was the lone winner of a first set and put point No. 2 on the board for TCU with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over No. 56 George Goldhoff.

Jerry Lopez rebounded from a 6-1 defeat in the opening set to take his final two sets, 6-4, 6-3, on court five to pick up a team-best 22nd win in singles this season and extend TCU’s lead to 3-0 in the match. Texas was able to score wins on court six and four to put the score at 3-2, but Rybakov came through with his 16th win this season and 10th on court two to seal the team’s 16th straight victory this season.

With the win at Texas, TCU has started league action 3-0 for the first time in program history and won two Big 12 road matches for the first time since joining the league in 2012. The victory also marks the team’s 10th win over an opponent ranked inside the Oracle/ITA top 20 this season.

Quotes of the Match
Head Coach David Roditi
Opening Statement
“Texas was all over us from the first point in singles. Texas head coach Michael Center and assistant coach Bruce Berque have the Longhorns playing at a very high level and if it weren’t for our players’ resilience and fight, we would have easily lost that match. I couldn’t be more proud of our team and our players. They stayed calm and found ways to get those singles wins. We are in one of the toughest conferences in the country and winning on the road against a good and well-coached team is hard to do. The “Frog” factor showed up today and now we put ourselves in a position to win the conference regular season.”
