Notes on a Scorecard

March 3, 2016 BIG 12 CHAMPIONS!
Congratulations to our two newest Big 12 champions in Ronnie Baker and Ford Story! Ronnie won the 60 meters with a TCU and Big 12 record time of 6.51 at the Indoor Track and Field Championships, while Ford captured the conference title in the 100 breast at the Swimming and Diving Championships. Ronnie’s mark is also No. 1 in the nation, No. 2 in the world and tied for the eighth-fastest in NCAA history.
A NEW RECORD!

It has been a true pleasure to have Zahna Medley as a part of our campus community the last four years. A standout women’s basketball student-athlete, who also excels as a member of the Neeley School of Business, Zahna became our program’s all-time leading scorer in Monday night’s win over Kansas. Zahna now has 1,911 career points, breaking the previous record of 1,892 set by the great Sandora Irvin. Zahna has also become our first women’s basketball player to be a three-time first-team all-conference selection. Congratulations Zahna!

MILESTONES

As you know, we have the best baseball coach in the country in Jim Schlossnagle. After becoming our career wins leader earlier this season, Schloss reached another milestone Tuesday night when he recorded his 600th career victory as a head coach. He has 523 wins in a Horned Frogs uniform and 77 during his two seasons at UNLV.

TCU/MAVS NIGHT

Thursday is TCU Night at the Dallas Mavericks game versus Sacramento. The first 300 TCU students, alumni and fans to buy a ticket will receive a special TCU/Dallas Mavericks themed logo hat! CLICK HERE to make your purchase.

CLASSROOM EXCELLENCE

Congratulations to women’s golfer Kelly McGovern and men’s golfer Giulio Castagnara on earning TCU Scholar-Athlete of the Month honors for February. Kelly tied for third individually at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic while shooting a career-low 3-under-par 213. The finance major also carries a 4.0 grade-point average. Castagnara posted his top-two finishes of the season in our two February tournaments. He was 13th at the Amer Ari Invitational in Hawaii before tying for ninth at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Desert, Calif.

3.669!

That above grade-point average is accurate! Our women’s golf program, under the direction of head coach Angie Ravaioli-Larkin, was the recipient of our Departmental Fall Team GPA Award at 3.669. Those young ladies have the Horned Frog Factor!

CLEAR BAG POLICY

As a reminder, we have the same clear bag policy in place for baseball games at Williams-Reilly Field at Charlie and Marie Lupton Baseball Stadium as you have experienced at Amon G. Carter Stadium and Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena. We very much appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

ON THE DOCKET

It’s another full weekend coming up for our student-athletes. Please make a point to be in the Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena for our Saturday noon game versus No. 6 Oklahoma. It’s our final home date, and we’ll have a pre-game recognition for our lone senior Devonta Abron.

Baseball is home this weekend as it continues its eight-game home stand versus Gonzaga. First pitch is 6:30 p.m. for Friday’s series opener, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. Equestrian is also home Saturday to face Kansas State in its 10 a.m. Senior Day meet at our Springtown facility.

Women’s basketball opens Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship play Friday at 8:30 p.m. in Oklahoma City versus Kansas. Men’s tennis, ranked third, will be in Florida for matches at USF and UCF. Beach volleyball opens its second season in program history in Tucson at the University of Arizona. Mark your calendar for March 19, when we have our historic first home matches.

SPANNING THE GLOBE

Below is a photo of Horned Frogs Roy and Pat Blackmon enjoying an 81-degree day in Cozumel. If you have any vacation pictures to share, while wearing your licensed TCU gear, please send them my way (delconte@tcu.edu).

NAME THE MOVIE QUOTE

Last Week’s Answer: Tom Cruise, as the world’s greatest bartender Brian Flanagan in “Cocktail,” proclaimed, “I am the last barman poet.”

This Week’s Question: My friend and TCU men’s soccer letterman Jim Brierton provides the following quote, “Gentlemen, let’s spike the punch!” Included below is Jim’s 4-year-old grandson Hunter Kelley, a fired up Horned Frogs’ fan.

COMPLIANCE CORNER

Dual Threat is a former football student-athlete at Ocean State University (OSU). Dual still holds OSU’s all-time record for most passing and rushing yards in a single season. After playing 10 years in the NFL, Dual decided to coach high school football in his home state of Rhode Island. At the end of the 2015 season, Dual became the winningest coach in state history. OSU would like to honor Dual at this weekend’s home basketball game. Since he is a high school coach, can OSU publicly recognize his coaching accomplishment?

Yes with conditions. NCAA Staff Interpretation – 3/15/13 – Institution Providing Recognition to High School Coach who is an Alumna or Alumnus (I) – states that an institution may publicly recognize a special achievement (e.g., retirement, coaching accomplishment) of a high school coach who is an alumna or alumnus of the institution and may provide benefits incidental to recognition of that award (e.g., award, certificate, meal) to the recipient and his or her relatives.
