AMES, Iowa – Ronnie Baker was crowned the Big 12 champion of the 60 meters on Saturday with an NCAA-best time of 6.51 in the finals.

It didn’t come easy, though. The officials called the athletes back three times due to a misfire and false starts by Baylor and Texas, but Baker didn’t miss a beat. He came off the block well and finished strong to top Oklahoma State’s John Teeters, who – at the moment – held the nation’s fastest time at 6.54.

“Ronnie had a great race,” said director of track and field Darryl Anderson. “He showed great composure, and after those false starts, he was able to recenter himself and have the best race he’s had all year. He ran really well yesterday in the prelim, and then had a great final race.”

Baker’s time of 6.51 not only broke the school record and the Big 12 record, but it is also ties for the 8th-fastest in NCAA history. Baker is now tied with former TCU great Kim Collins for the No. 2 time in the world.

“It’s a great way for Ronnie to go into the NCAA meet in a couple of weeks. He set himself up to go to the NCAA meet and defend his title.”

Next, Bowerman Watch List selection Baker will attempt to win back-to-back NCAA 60 meter titles as he heads to Birmingham, Ala. on March 11 for the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Overall, TCU claimed three runner-up honors at the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championship on Saturday.

Senior Brianna McGhee earned silver in the women’s 60-meter dash with a time of 8.15. In the prelims on Friday, McGhee broke the school record with a personal-best time of 8.14. Flannigan also placed in the finals, taking home eighth place at 8.58.

Brianna McGhee ran really well. She was just off her personal best today. We were really pleased with the way she competed, and she punched her ticket to run at the NCAA meet in two weeks.”

In a 200-meter dash that was decided by .002 seconds, senior Sam Watts placed second with a finals time of 20.79.

“We’re pleased with Sam Watts’ performance. He came up a little bit short in the 200, but he ran a 20.79 and showed great consistency throughout the whole indoor season. He put himself in a position to have a great opportunity at the NCAA Championship.”

Sophomore Scotty Newton took home silver as he recorded a mark of 51-7.25 (15.73m) in the men’s triple jump. Junior Ryan Finniealso placed in the finals, finishing in eighth.

In the women’s 400 meters, freshman Kayla Heard finished with a season-best 54.72, placing sixth.

Also scoring for TCU was junior Iphona Paiement, who placed eighth in the women’s 60 meters with a time of 7.56.

Overall, the men’s team placed ninth, and the women finished in 10th.

“As a team, we’re in the process of working to get better. We’ll get better as we progress, and we’ll see improvement as we move outside.”

The Horned Frogs will have athletes competing at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 11-12 to close out the 2016 indoor season.
