GoFrogs: Notes on a Scorecard

Feb. 5, 2016 BIG 12 MEETINGS

Greetings everyone! This week’s edition arrives as I conclude Big 12 meetings with my counterparts around the conference. I’m sure you’ve seen the extensive media coverage related to this week’s gathering. The Big 12 has great momentum, and we are truly honored to be a proud member!

HEALTHY PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP MONTH
Throughout February, we’re offering programs for our student-athletes to focus on multiple types of healthy personal relationships. We began the month by hosting Alexis Jones as she spoke on the issue of sexual assault separately to our men’s and women’s teams. Our student-athletes will also have the opportunity to participate in escalation training focusing on peer intervention in situations ranging from substance abuse, drinking while driving and violence.

As part of “The Body Project,” trained peer educators from campus will be present all month during study hall hours in the Athletics Academic Center. This peer-led program helps facilitate discussions about body image and the way individuals feel about their bodies in living a healthy lifestyle.

SUPER BOWL REPRESENTATION
Best wishes to Horned Frog Colin Jones as he takes the field for the Carolina Panthers in Sunday’s Super Bowl 50 against the Denver Broncos. Curtis Fuller, another TCU football standout, is an assistant coach with the Panthers. We also have Danny Morrison, my predecessor at TCU, with Carolina as the team president.

WELCOME NEW HORNED FROGS!
We’re glad to have 22 signees on board with our football program. Congratulations to head coach Gary Patterson and his staff on securing an outstanding class. CLICK HERE for a full recap. Spring football is just around the corner, as we return to the practice field Feb. 27.

BASEBALL SEASON GENERAL ADMISSION TICKETS AVAILABLE
The 2016 baseball season is here! With all reserved seat season tickets sold out again, we now have a new general admission season ticket that allows you to see every game for only $165. We have the new right-field berm that will provide an exciting new way to enjoy the action. In addition to our attractive Big 12 schedule, which includes Oklahoma, Texas, Tech, Kansas State and West Virginia, we have nonconference series with USC and Gonzaga. You can get your tickets now at GoFrogs.com and experience Lupton Stadium Magic Live!

OOPS!
Due to a printing error, we had an unfortunate typo on a baseball schedule card season-ticket holders recently received. The mistake should have been caught on our end, and we sincerely apologize for it. The cards have been corrected and are now available.

AUCTION TIME
Starting Monday, Feb. 8, our popular women’s basketball game-worn pink Nike uniforms will be auctioned off on GoFrogs.com. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Kay Yow Foundation, whose mission is to end women’s cancer. TCU head coach Raegan Pebley is a board member. The team will wear the jerseys at our Play 4 Kay game next Saturday, Feb. 13, vs. Iowa State at 1 p.m.

OUR HALL OF FAMER!
Congratulations to TCU co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Sonny Cumbie on his selection to the Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame! As you know, Sonny was a quarterback at Texas Tech before eventually making his way to Fort Worth.

TRACK UPDATE
The Lowdon Track and Field Complex has long been a popular gathering place for the community. Due to resurfacing, please note that it will be closed for one month.

ON THE DOCKET

We have another full slate of weekend action on tap for you. Men’s basketball hosts Kansas Saturday at 11 a.m. in a sold-out game. Our Monday 6 p.m. home game with Oklahoma State does have tickets available. Women’s basketball is at Oklahoma tomorrow, before welcoming Baylor to the Schollmaier Arena Wednesday at 7 p.m.

We’re hosting the Patriot Rifle Conference Championships this weekend. Our No. 4-ranked rifle program will welcome Air Force, Alaska, Nevada, Ohio State and UTEP to campus. Equestrian is home Friday to face Fresno State. Track and field will be in a meet in College Station, while men’s tennis, now ranked second nationally, will face Stanford and Cal this weekend at the Big 12/Pac-12 Challenge in Austin. Men’s golf is also on the road, concluding play this weekend at a tournament in Hawaii.

NAME THE MOVIE QUOTE
Last Week’s Answer: Many of you know that “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” is my favorite movie. It was Brad Hamilton, played brilliantly by Judge Reinhold, who said, “Arnold, do you want to work at All-American Burger?”

This Week’s Question: “What the heck is Brett Favre doing here?”

COMPLIANCE CORNER
A local sporting goods store would like to recognize the Ocean State University (OSU) football team for winning its second consecutive national championship Monday night. The store bought advertising space on a few billboards near campus that read “Congratulations Ocean State University Football Team– ORCAS Second National Championship!” Is this permissible?

Yes, with conditions. NCAA Bylaw 12.5.1.4 states that it is permissible for a student-athlete’s name or picture, or the group picture of an institution’s athletics squad, to appear in an advertisement of a particular business, commercial product or service, provided: (Revised: 11/1/07 effective 8/1/08, 5/21/08)

(a.) The primary purpose of the advertisement is to publicize the sponsor’s congratulations to the student-athlete or team;
(b.) The advertisement does not include a reproduction of the product with which the business is associated or any other item or description identifying the business or service other than its name or trademark;
(c.) There is no indication in the makeup or wording of the advertisement that the squad members, individually or collectively, or the institution endorses the product or service of the advertiser;
(d.) The student-athlete has not signed a consent or release granting permission to use the student-athlete’s name or picture in a manner inconsistent with the requirements of this section; and
(e.) If the student-athlete has received a prize from a commercial sponsor in conjunction with participation in a promotional contest and the advertisement involves the announcement of receipt of the prize, the receipt of the prize is consistent with the provisions of Bylaw 12.5.2.3.3 and official interpretations.
