GoFrogs: Jones to Represent TCU in Super Bowl 50

FORT WORTH, Texas — TCU will be represented in Sunday’s Super Bowl 50 by safety Colin Jones of the Carolina Panthers.

Jones is the 27th Horned Frog to be on a Super Bowl team. This will be the sixth Super Bowl in the last eight years that TCU has had at least one player in the game.

Jones is not the only member of the Panthers with TCU ties. Carolina team president Danny Morrison was TCU’s athletics director from 2005-09, while Panthers’ assistant special teams/nickel back coach Curtis Fuller was a two-time all-conference selection and three-year letterman (1998-00) at safety for the Horned Frogs.

Jones is in his fourth year with Carolina and fifth season overall in the NFL. He was a 2011 sixth-round draft pick of the San Francisco 49ers.

Jones was All-Mountain West as a senior, placing second on TCU’s Rose Bowl championship squad in both tackles (80) and tackles for loss (11 1/2). He added three sacks, four pass breakups and a fumble recovery. He returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown at UNLV in addition to recording nine stops in the game.

Jones recorded a career-high 10 tackles, including a sack, in TCU’s 21-19 Rose Bowl win over Wisconsin.

A native of Bridgeport, Texas, Jones was instrumental in TCU leading the nation in total defense each of his final three seasons. Jones, who came to TCU after being a standout running back in high school, was a four-year letterman. He totaled 124 tackles in his TCU career.

TCU cornerback Larry Brown was the Super Bowl XXX Most Valuable Player after his two interceptions led the Dallas Cowboys to a 27-17 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
